Camshaft holding tool for Subaru EJ25D is hard to find

The EJ25D and other Phase 1 non-turbo DOHC Subarus need a tool like this to hold the cam gears in place while you replace the timing belt, but only that expensive Company 23 tool will work on the older non-turbos. And worse, there are no cheaper knockoffs available. Even Aliexpress came back with nothing

Newer Phase 2 DOHC EJ turbos have a much wider selection to choose from, including these for as low as $10 each!

Would something like this red thing work?

I know I'll also need a crank pulley tool. I will order one soon.

I read this about the red one..

could not use and would not work on my subaru, And yes it is cheap plastic, and no instructions on how to use it.

I would modify one of the cheap ones with a couple of cheap sockets with threaded rod and nuts or a bolt welded on to the socket, it shouldn't be too difficult if you can weld it.

This is a good crank holding tool. I have one it works great.

That is similar to what I was thinking about, it is even easier using the cheap tool of ebay.
