Calling all diesel and Subaru Fans

Toyota tried selling 1.4 and 2.0 Corolla diesels here but pulled them for lack of sales.

No doubt new emissions technologies on diesels like nitrous oxide mitigation systems will eventually become reliable too but on the other hand gasoline engine emission systems are very mature now and well-integrated.

Certainly that is irrefutable until we see (if ever) variable compression engines, however small turbo gasoline engines running a high boost such as VW TSI and Ford Ecoboost are getting very close to giving similar fuel economy ratings. Load-leveling systems such as that in the Prius give impressive results with a relatively-cheap engine.

EGR? Done on diesels since the early 1980s, and on gassers for 10 years before.


EGR on a gasser is fine. EGR on a diesel if awful, tending to fill the intake with carbon. I saw a Ram so plugged up it barely ran...the intake heat grid was plugged by a huge chunk of carbon! (Also note: just the EGR valve on some diesels can top $500!)

Not 40,000psi! THAT is the big problem: the injection pressures are so high, the parts are so precise, that they just don't hold up. Offhand, every vehicle with a Bosch CP4 series injection pump is a hand grenade. The pump failing and resulting in a $10,000+ repair is NOT a matter of if, but WHEN.

Maybe so, but if the is difference between a Subaru that could be sold in the U.S. without a prohibitive gas guzzler tax and one that couldn't, well the flat four isn't really all that, and there's nothing wrong with a Toyota inline four.
 
With the price of diesel and the new emission requirements placed upon diesels I'd rather not. EGR, DPF, urea injection, etc... nah, I'll pass.

This is a bit out of date I think, but I expect as they age and become more popular the DPF will be priced similarly to a catalytic converter.

Not all small diesels require urea, for instance the Jetta and Golf (at least in the US) do not use it, whereas the Passat does. The Passat usually turns in slightly better MPG in spite of being larger and urea isn't very costly.

I would've signed but the petition is closed. Diesel is the way to go and a properly tuned diesel is actually much cleaner than any gasoline engine out there.

We drive an X535d but I wish there had been more choices when we made our decision. People can say what they want about diesel fuel and the price but ANYTIME I can cruise at 75 - 80 MPH in a large AWD SUV and still get 28 MPG, I'm in!

OMG, urea injection is such a menace! IF you use the correct engine oil, IF you prevent excessive engine idling, IF you run it like its meant to be ran, IF you keep the urea tank filled, IF, IF, IF....sounds just like stuff you have to do with a gas engine too doesn't it (minus the urea that is available eveywhere now)? The urea tank in our X lasts well past BMW's recommended oil change, naturally since I'm a BITOGER I change it at half of their interval, but still, its not any issue filling it and its certainly not that expensive.

I've been around urea trucks/buses since they were introduced and the only issue I've seen with them is improper/lack of maintenance.
