Toyota tried selling 1.4 and 2.0 Corolla diesels here but pulled them for lack of sales.

No doubt new emissions technologies on diesels like nitrous oxide mitigation systems will eventually become reliable too but on the other hand gasoline engine emission systems are very mature now and well-integrated.

Certainly that is irrefutable until we see (if ever) variable compression engines, however small turbo gasoline engines running a high boost such as VW TSI and Ford Ecoboost are getting very close to giving similar fuel economy ratings. Load-leveling systems such as that in the Prius give impressive results with a relatively-cheap engine.
