“Pro tip: unbranded gas comes from the same refineries, storage tanks, and pipelines, and it meets the same state standards to keep your engine running clean,” Newsom’s office posted Thursday on X. “Big Oil is already making billions off Trump’s Iran War; don’t let them rip you off even more by overpaying for the brand name.”

says the governor from the state with the highest gas tax. TopTier and auto manufacturers beg to differ.

There is no such thing as cheap non branded gas in the USA. There are only about 130 operating refineries. Most of them owned by some of the largest oil companies or refiners in the world.

There are only so many add packs approved by the EPA. All gasoline follows EPA standards and is tested.

If you get "bad" gas, it happened at the station - nowhere else.

If you wish to pay more for Top Tier that is fine too but it doesn't make non top tier fuel bad at all. It still meets all the minimum specs.

From the time our family business left Mobil in 1998 til we stopped selling fuel in 2009 we were unbranded. At that time in this area Citgo and Sunoco were the only ones with their own terminals/pipeline. Everything else came from PPC (has since changed names) and was blended at the terminal to meet whatever brands standard. When our distributor sent Citgo it came with a Citgo BOL, everything else came on PPC invoicing and said "Blended by PPC to xxx specification." While we were unbranded/unaffiliated we usually had Citgo, Valero or Marathon fuel. We never had fuel quality issues and we know that because we would have wound up fixing the cars. Today I usually buy Sunoco (has a rewards program with the grocery store I shop at) Gulf (down the street from my house) or Sheetz or wawa and have never had a fuel quality related issue in my own vehicle. Other than customers putting high alcohol fuel in vehicles not capable of running it I I couldnt tell you the last time I diagnosed/repaired a fuel quality issue.
