True. Life needs to be longer to accomplish the same amount as you can in other states. As an ex-Southern Californian-you will spend the longer life in traffic on the freeway......Hawaii isn't much better when the tourists return in force.
https://scitechdaily.com/key-protei...rnessed-to-extend-healthy-lifespan-in-humans/Forget that. I'm waiting for the discovery of the aging gene and therapy to halt or even reverse it's process.
Well you're lucky it wasn't as bad as Christopher Reeves, once superman, afterwards a quadpalegic.I have been hurt worst in Horse accidents than motorcycle accidents. Horses are dangerous. Then again you are having the best thrill in life the micro second before you fall off. So says I.
Yeah, I agree with much if not all of your post. Genes certainly play a major role from all backgrounds. But I do think one can overcome much of that gene deficiency by living a life with a healthy diet.Whether one might live longer moving to (for example) Japan, which has the longest lifespan, has been the subject of a number of studies. Or even whether moving to France might reduce a man's risk of heart attack.
The answer seems to be clear as mud. Japanese people that live in the USA retain long lifespans. There seems to be a lot of information claiming that "diet" is responsible, but clearly good genes play a major role. An insurance company study made bold claims that the typical Japanese diet was responsible for the lifespan, by reducing circulatory issues and cancers. But the fact remains, Asian people have fewer MI's (heart attacks), strokes and cancers when compared to the average Westerner, without regard to diet, exercise or location.
I live on the East coast of South Florida, which seems to be in the USA's top tier. Will I live longer if I move to Japan? From what I can tell, the answer seems to be no.
.....
There is no question in my mind, the USA's food supply is directly causing people to become obese (a major risk factor for early death) likely from hormones, and other chemicals in our foods. Furthermore, we have very high rates of thyroid failure, a common cause of obesity. In fact, the USA is second only to China and Brazil with regard to thyroid failure. And Brazil may be directly a result of excess iodine consumption.
In any case, take an Obese American to many remote countries, feed them the exact same amount of food and watch the weight come off. We see it happen almost instantly when we travel.
I give you a lot of credit for making the effort , it's not easy .Yeah, I agree with much if not all of your post. Genes certainly play a major role from all backgrounds. But I do think one can overcome much of that gene deficiency by living a life with a healthy diet.
More or less I think I am an example for my fathers side of the family where almost all men were struck down and died from heart disease and diabetes. Even though I ate healthy most of my life by that I mean starting at the age of 30 or so, after every passing decade I took that eating to the next level. I was never obese, sometimes a little overweight but never close to obese, I always watched my weight, by BMI standards it was over weight.
It started with fruits, I always ate a lot, but just being aware of what was in the food I was eating.
After the age of thirty I think safe to say I was off the fast food thing, that was a start. By the time I was in my 50's reality really was setting in with my brother and his heart issues/diabetes. I really stated taking things to the next level. I only wish I did it sooner but I was eating far more healthy than anyone I knew. I also occasionally smoked, never around family though, so not a heavy smoker and haven't for a long time..
I only wish I could teach young people to stop with the fast food and corporate garbage they put in their mouths everyday. Fruits, Vegetables, no white flour, lean meats and fish and never smoke.
For the last decade my family might have called me extreme in my diet. Close to or within my BMI, No snack foods, No fatty meats, NEVER fast foods, NEVER fried foods. Only fruit, nuts, no sugar added low fat Activia Yogurt, vegetables, poultry, fish (2 to 4 times a week) NEVER any sweets like cookies, cakes, ect ect.
So what was the result? So far I am the only male in my family without diabetes and so far the only male in my family that has not needed heart bypass surgery or heart intervention. All males on my side of the family have had heart conditions and diabetes long before the age I am now, by at least a decade.
Ok, that is the good news, now to confirm your post and the bad news. GENES = yes, without question make a huge difference. I know I have the bad heart and diabetes genes. How? I have had over time as a precaution going back well over a decade, an occasional nuclear stress test.
Always good results, then the Late Winter and SPRING of 2021 came along. Some chest discomfort got me to the hospital one day, confirmed it wasnt a heart attack but the doctor on staff wanted me to see a Cardiologist ASAP and he stressed not this month but like this week.
SO they took me in, I wanted to jump right into a cauterization but Health Insurance denied, insisted on nuclear stress test first, results = stress test was ok, not great but some common PVCs.
This is where having a good cardiologist and staff comes in = I know/knew the only real way to know the true condition of your arteries is a heart cauterization, again, well versed on procedures done to the males in my family. So they met with me and discussed the results of the stress test, they told me technically its a good stress test, some abnormalities that are "normal" and common. But then there is my bleak family history.
They would like to go ahead and do the cauterization if that is what I wanted. I jumped at the chance with a YES!
Cauterization is the gold standard checking for arterial disease.
They used the stress test to get the ok for the Health Ins to proceed. I WANTED to know what I was up against, not getting any younger and a stress test will only show if you have well over 50% plaque in your arteries.
So the cauterization was done, it was REALLY cool, your awake for the whole thing, doped up though. Memory fades in and out but remember looking up at 4 or 6 big screen monitors and seeing the arteries around my heart on the screen. It was wild. Anyway, when done doctor went out to my wife because he said he told me but I would not remember *LOL*
He said I has "dots of plaque all over the place" but no blockages that required any intervention. He said everything was around 10% plaque. Technically that is less than 20% which is minimal plaquing.
Doctor has been great with follow ups ect. Just had a follow up in Dec 2021. My Cholesterol is so low that he doesnt really want me to make it any lower, says my body needs some! *LOL* Says I may never need any intervention with my earring habits ect.
Wow, long post, confirming what you said, GENES are important but eating only healthy can beat out early death when it comes to the heart and arteries. I know, based on the way I eat, plaque will never accumulate so much as to needing intervention and (finger crossed) so far no diabetes when other family members had it 20 years before the age that I am. Im hoping with my diet I never have to deal with it and if I ever do, maybe not until my 80s instead of the 40s for other members of my family.
Ok, one more things about genes, my wife is asian. Grew up in a wealthy area of a third world country, privileged life, horrible diet, tons of sweets, fatty foods ect ect...it was actually a status symbol there, beef, chicken (but they hated the white meat! ) they didnt eat fish! *LOL* ... my wife and her family members however are all within their BMI but their lipids tests are horrible. Yet no heart issues. Her mom now well into her 90s looks like she is 70 years old. Time will tell, my wife doesnt eat as good as me, lipids not great but a lot of what I eat rub off on her.
Once in a while I even eat a hamburger lately! I buy the chop meat, she makes them for me. Get this, the chop meat I buy has the American Heart Association symbol on it. 96% lean! *LOL* sometimes as low as 94% But still never have more than 1 a month, some months 2, some months none.
(hopefully you read this LONG post, I almost lost the entire thing, I closed the browser by mistake, went into history and got lucky)
Genes still gave me the disease but this prevented intervention (so far) PS - in 11/10/21 I joined a gym started exercising to the next level, I was able to significantly raise my good cholesterol to a better ratio.
Im kind of proud of this and posted this before =

Thank you, I appreciate the comment. My only regret as many of us know. I wish I knew to do it sooner.I give you a lot of credit for making the effort , it's not easy .![]()
I understand how you feel when you eat junk food . We tend not to eat out much , i have a local farmer who I buy beef and pork from , half a animal at a time and freeze .Thank you, I appreciate the comment. My only regret as many of us know. I wish I knew to do it sooner.
I try without pushing to teach my kids, they of course know how I eat and I am sure a little bit rubs off on them, ironically more so with my daughters, but as we all were at one time, when young, being old seems so far away and you think you have all the time in the world, until you get older, then you realize time goes fast and your time on earth really isn't all that long.
Your right, not easy but it does get more easy, its a "mental" thing that you have to get into. My brother cant understand how I do it.
I now look at food as I look at fuel for my truck. Fuel for the body is what I TRY to get into my head. Good clean fuel.
I think he and my dad taught me WHY I had to do it if I didnt want to end up like them.
IF I EAT JUNK NOW, it will make me sick, almost literally and with disgust that I did it.
I also learned going on a "diet" is BS, nothing more than a big MEDIA craze. Think about that. What is the purpose of going on a diet?
To lose weight then go back to eating the way you did and gain it back/
Forget diets, makes no sense, change eating habits to healthy and weight will come down and stay down.
Freaking corporations got humans all figured out, one group makes us all fat, the other sells us "diets" to get skinny again only for the other to make us fat again. There used to be a saying "just say no"
Thanks again for the comment. Sorry for the rambling on!!! Kind of passionate about the subject ...
What, you never heard of a skinny person having a heart attack? It’s all in a healthy lifestyle, what you eat and your BMI.
Simple stuff.
Did I say that? What, you never heard of a skinny person having a heart attack?
I have.
Well let’s agree that we agree on some things and definitely disagree on others.Alarmguy,
I neglected to clearly add that being at or very near one's ideal weight is key to any of this being relevant. Clearly every aspect of health changes when we stray from that. However, how you achieve perfect BMI makes precious little difference. Metabolism takes what you consume and breaks it down.
As for Heart catheterization, it is effective in finding and often repairing issues. It is good that you have no major issues. However, you might find that Ancient Egyptians had Atherosclerosis at much the same levels as we do. The idea that Atherosclerosis and/or myocardial infarction is preventable by diet and exercise, is sadly, incorrect. The idea that a healthy flexible endothelium in older age is somehow affected by diet is also incorrect. The body produces less of the compounds necessary to keep vessels open. Also, in some people, LDL can be exceedingly high, regardless of diet.
The best we can say is that these things (diet and exercise) are a help.
The CDC?Consider the source of the article.... meh
The industry has been trying to make money off people wanting to get thin quick. If you follow what people do in long life culture you will find that our Jenny Craig diets are all screwed up.Thank you, I appreciate the comment. My only regret as many of us know. I wish I knew to do it sooner.
