Does anybody know the bypass pressure valve specs for these two filters?

- VW/Audi 078-115-561-J (Mann 930/21) for Audi 1.8T

- VW/Audi 068-115-561-B (Mann 940/25) for Audi V6

For some reason the smaller 930/21 costs almost double of the larger 940/21. I don't know if the 940/25 is a LongLife filter.

Both filters use a 2.5 bar by-pass relief valve. Both have an anti-drain.

That's as much as I know for now without asking for media specs..

FYI:
The 930 has the same dimensions and valves as the 930/21

The 940, 940/13, 940/15n, 940/44 all have the same dimensions and valves as the 940/25

You "could" go to the 950 series which is even longer yet..170mm
Same OD and threads along with gasket orientation.

Having fun now?

Before you ask me...email them about the media specs/ratings:

Thanks, Filter guy. I was asking because many of us Audi V6 owners use the larger 940/25 filter, and I was wondering if its larger capacity came along with an inappropriate bypass valve pressure setting or an inferior filter medium. I'm going to email Mann and find out about the filter medium.

I got an automated reply from the marketing coordinator of MANN+HUMMEL USA, INC, telling me she was out of town and would reply once back. I'm still waiting...

Mori,

Here it is:

For 1.8T
W719/30, 06A.115.561B, 2.5bar, 76x123mm, LL, Orig1.8&EarlyAAH/AFCV6.
W940/25, 068.115.561B, 2.5bar, 93x142mm, NotLL*, Newer1.8&Diesel.

For 2.8/3.0
W930/21, 078.115.561J, 3.0bar, 93x114mm, LL, LateAFCV6&NewerV6.

(*)not stamped as Lanzeitfilter on the filter.

I would not use the 940/25 on the Audi V6 since it has a lower bypass pressure. Also it is not a langzeitfilter (2 jahre).

Now that I have your attention, can you look under your hood, and tell me the part numbers of the engine and vacuum diagram stickers?

Thanks,
G

Thanks for those specs. I guess I should let them know on the 12v forum. It seems an increasing number of people is using the larger filter.

I'll gladly take a look under the hood tomorrow morning and see if I can find those part numbers you want. I'll send you a PM.

btw..

2.5 bar by-pass valve equates to a 36.75 PSID rating.

14.7 PSID = 1 bar

Wasn't sure if you knew that, I should have made that clear to begin with.

Well, until I hear from Mann I won't comment on that 0.5 bar discrepancy.

PS: G, you got a PM regarding the labels.

The 2004 book does list the 930/21 as a 3.0 bar by-pass valve.

Which makes it "unique". As none of the other oil filters use that valve.

So what does that tell you?

Either Mann has 1 part number amoungst many that has a unique valve for itself.

Or they retested that one part number and changed the valve specs in the catalog due to updated ISO specs.

Or..they made a catalog error.

Audi/VW had a TSB on the small sump capacity of the 1.8T in the Audi A4 at least, probably other models as well. Also related to complaints about
The "fix" is to use the larger Mann 940/25 filter.

Some fix! Barely any increase in capacity, but I use this on our Audi. Better that than nothing.

Let's take a look at Purolator filters.

For 1.8T I4
L20252, 06A115561B, 25-35psi
L30257, 068115561B, 20-25psi

For 2.8/3.0 V6
L25401, 078115561J, 30-40psi

It appears that the J filter has greater bypass pressure than either B filters. And, the oversized 1.8T filter that some folks like to use on their V6 is 5-20psi less. Similar to Mann - relatively at least.

__

917/30 -> 940/25, +13.7 oz (.43 qt)
930/21 -> 940/25, +6.4 oz (.2 qt)

Yes, but the oversized V6 filter proposition is less appealing.

6.4 oz seem not worth it, especially if the larger filter does not have the proper bypass pressure valve spec and if the filter medium is also not what's recommended for the 12v.

By the way, still no word from Mann (USA).

Can you please explain further - the 940/25 is what was recommended for the 1.8T (20v) for the larger filter, and is what you receive when ordering from AutohauszAZ, ECS Tuning, etc. Is there a discrepancy on this?

Agree on the additional capacity being a poor fix - that's why I stick with 4500 mile OCI's using only a synthetic on this engine.
