Hello all,

After looking around for a long time I do plan to apply an axial TP bypass filter in my car.
Have read the discussions on cartridge versus TP filters and the different brands of TP and their different dimensions.
I have a source for a 2 layer TP that is not embossed and is tightly rolled. But the inside diameter is 39.5 mm (1 9/16 inch).
Outside is about 4 7/16 and length is 3 7/8 .

Would this fit in a Frantz 1003 AOC ? (old stock sold on ebay)

Greetings,

The important seal on a Frantz is at the bottom around the core. That core is almost too large for the Frantz. I would push the roll down on my knee and start the concave end in first. I wouldn't push the roll all the way in. I would want pressure to be on the core as I push the canister down on the base. Make sure the core is round so that the seal will cut into the paper outside the core. The old Motor Guards and Franz's were designed for 1 1/2" TP.
I have been known to sleeve the center tube with 1 5/8" OD copper water pipe. It isn't necessary and I might get a case of Scott that is a little smaller than 1 5/8" and can't be used for oil filters. I then have to find another use for the TP. It is safer for me as a dealer to just set them up for 1 1/2" and put a seal at the bottom that will seal most any of them. There are a few 1 3/8" core rolls. There are a few TP rolls designed for filters that are about 1/2" but you have to use their housings. I'm not too big on paying 10 bucks for a roll of TP. I have been cutting the core in about 4 places at the top of the MG-30 so that it will crush at the top instead of farther down. The core is pretty leak proof if you don't tear it at the bottom. The Motor Guard compresses the roll down against the seal at the bottom. The Frantz depends on oil pressure. You know everything is working when the oil pressure is compressing the element down on the screen. For multi pass oil filtration you can get away with a lot. For one pass filtration such as fuel or compressed air you have to do it right.

I think your Euro roll is too short, Trollfan. The roll that I just measured was essentially square ..about 4.5 X 4.5 (+/-).

I think that you would be okay if you can sleeve the interior for the full length of the Frantz canister. Your sealing issues are along the center tube. I'm uncertain how Euro piping runs size-wise ..if it will allow an easy fit from readily available stock

There is also the possibility of putting a "stop" at the base of the Frantz that would support the shorter roll from the bottom (trying to remember the flow direction here

) ..or top as it may be. In any event, the idea would be to push the roll to the end of ingress/entrance of the oil ..and assure that the roll stays pushed against that end ..sealing it. After the oil migrates through the roll, as short or long as it may be, then you don't care about how it exits.

If it follows this flow pattern (it should)

Then, after you've solved the center tube issue (put a sleeve inside the roll) ..then you need something to stop the roll from moving "up" (in this image). You'll have to be creative.

Thanks Guy's for the help and the image.

I will look for the correct size of tubing to make a tight fit on the core. Not having a bypass filter housing yet I might even be tempted to built one myself that does fit the TP rolls I have.

Trollfan ...You can always just find an appropriate center tube and wind your own roll using paper towels. You just carefully cut it to the proper length and then wind it up on the tube.

I can't say that this would be fun ..but it should be cheap.
