bypass filter change intervals

It has been over ten years since I have sold Frantz. I don't remember what they recommend. The Motor Guard recommendations were writen when engines were a lot dirtier running. You have to do overkill on the recommendations because every engine is different. As a rule the people that install the Frantz or Motor Guard have a mind of their own and could care less what someone recommends.
Car makers recommendations are based on selling cars. If you are a car maker and make recommendations based on what makes the car last the longest you will lose business. These people are not stupid. They know how to market a product. I put 240,000 on a Subaru changing the TP every fourth of July and adding a quart of oil. For me that was about 12,000 miles. I went as far as 80,000 miles but I averaged an oil drain every 60,000 miles. It was still running great but leaked oil. For that car every 6,000 miles or every 6 months would have been better. A friend came out of a resturant to find no trace of his Chevy. I gave the car to him. I had a chance to buy a nice little 87 Camry for 600.00. The car wouldn't run in wet weather and the air conditioner didn't work. I don't use air and a set of plug wires and cap fixed the wet weather problem. I would love to have a big version of that four cylinder engine in my Ford one ton. Back in the early days Cadillac made the statement that they would never make any thing but a four cylinder because there was no need. That little engine proves it.

No wonder when I asked the same question on TP change interval when I just installed my Frantz filters and I got very few responses. I am sure this question will always come up for new bypass filter users.

Using bypass filters is merely one of several aspects of keeping cars in good shape. Carbonization is an issue that every gas combustion engine must face. I merely share my finding on how decarbonization might impact on the TP change interval as a case study (if you're interested). Every engine has different severity of carbonization problem. It is just the matter of how clean the oil you want in your engine.

How often do you decargonize your engine with bypass filters? Do you always change TPs after that? I sure love to hear your experience.

The Frantz change intervals sound good to me. It's all a guessing game. Your engine needs clean oil continually plus it needs enough new oil. I made the mistake of telling one of the honchos at work that since he was using Mobil 1 he could go 5,000 miles between filter changes. The problem was he was running such a high oil temperature that the oxidation increased to the point where he had to change the oil at about 50,000 mil. If the truck was in the north instead of Dallas TX oxidation wouldn't have been a problem. Up north the problem might be codensation.
When I was selling the Frantz the Sheriff's Department at Salem Oregon was changing the Frantz every 2 to 3,000 miles and the full flow filter once a year. They had been doing that for 20 years. Might still be. I would think that would be extreme use with all the idling. It would be a lot more severe use in Dallas. You just can't treat them all the same. It also depends on what you require as far as engine life and performance. You can get sloppy with your maintenance if you don't plan on keeping the car that long.
The Motor Guard is superior for fuel or ATF but all of the filters that take a full roll of TP work equally well for motor oil. Motor Guard opened up the filters to get more flow for compressed air. That really helped for ATF and fuel.
I don't have an opinion on the Trasco. Never had a reason to use one.
