Bye bye K&N...

^...and really, probably the best the average joe can do(raises hand) is a UOA to see how much actual dirt got in, depending on the type of oil you used(as some oils have silicon from the bottle virgin, part of formulation or not), which is why sticking to one brand of oil for xx amount of miles with 1 air filter, then proceeding with the 2nd filter for xx miles/same oil is about as good as it gets, 2 simple UOA later...well, there you go.

The trickiest part is reading into such a UOA for what it's worth. Air filtration efficiency is even more important the longer the OCI, as shorter intervals give actual dirt/dust the chance to wash out with the drain of used oil. You are relying strictly on oil filter to get what is ingested via the engine from all sources, not just the air filter.

Ok, for the sake of being a BITOG nerd im going to switch everything back over to paper, suggestions on brand to try ?

If you want to save some money buy Purolator filters from AAP and use the codes. Got a Purolator Paper filter for $14.00 from them.

I'd only get a Purolator BLUE pre-oiled(?) air filter if it was available in my app. It's not and the standard Purolator has 'average' filtration ratings, IMO. At least, for my app.

If I'm going paper I want Napa Gold/Wix or the dealer air filter. It depends on the app.

Purolator $14.00
Napa Gold $24.00

Is the $10.00 more worth it? Just asking as the Pure One doesn't come for my vehicle.

Not sure how well the standard/classic Purolator filters for your app, it was mine that I didn't care for much. Regardless, you should be able to use the air filter for 2-3 years, right? Stretch the $10 over another 2 years. If your money is tight, the Purolator won't hurt by any means, it's just that I believe the Napa Gold to be a slightly better filter(generally speaking) compared to a classic Purolator, nothing more nothing less.

Either is an upgrade in efficiency than the K&N more than likely. If that is your concern, both are a win over the K&N.

ADDED:

For instance, this is the sales pitch from AAP website regarding the Purolator Classic that is recommended for my app(for the record, I'd be all for getting the Blue Puro if it were offered)

Quote:
Purolator Classic Air Filter; 96.5% efficiency; provides enhanced protection to help improve performance and fuel efficiency; meets or exceeds OEM specifications.

Got this off the Napa site about the Napa Gold. Doesn't tell me much though.

" NAPA Gold Air Filters Last 40% Longer & Holds 53% More Dirt Than Other Leading Competitive Brands."

Can't see paying an extra $10.00 for that statement.

Also got the $5.00 rebate from Purolator for the air filter so it brings it down to $9.00.

Not sure which engine you have in the Ascender, I assume this is the car you are asking about?, but here are the air filter options on RockAuto.

I'd be interested in seeing if the washable FRAM did well in your app.

Air filters

PS: Do you already have the Purolator? Use it and don't worry about things then. Just make sure it seats/seals well, whatever you choose. Then, get a UOA if you plan to extend your interval.

PPS: I like the Tough Guard Fram, too.

I have the GM 4.2 Inline 6.

I have used the Fram yellow oiled one before but never did a UOA. I got the Purolator one right now and keeping the K&N since there was no dirt or dust in my air inlet duct. Why I bought the Purolator is beyond me. LOL! I do want to try the Napa Gold one though. Guess I'll run this Purolator one for about 20K then change it out. I will check out your link thanks.

Perhaps it's not an exact fit for the airbox, or there is another way that dirt got through there? When I first bought my Corvette used, it had a K&N air filter on it, and I was dreading my first UOA as I figured there would be tons of silicon on my report. But it turned out that the K&N did a fantastic job of keeping dirt out of my engine, I was only getting roughly 1ppm of silicon for every 1000 miles on all of my UOAs! So I kept the K&N on the car until I got my Vararam intake and it comes with it's own cotton gauze style filter. With this new filter, it's letting a bit more dirt in, although that could also be a byproduct of the intake allowing a lot more airflow as well, since the Vararam sucks in a lot more air than the stock intake.

I think that if the K&N fits the airbox perfectly, and isn't overoiled or underoiled, then it has the potential to trap dirt very well.

I just got back from my road trip to Alaska!

Prior to the OCI for the road trip, I changed the filter to the Amsoil Ea cone. I drove it pretty hard to try and get any dust in the intake sucked into that oil. I then changed the oil, and proceeded to drive almost 9,000 miles up to Anchorage, Alaska and back! The new filter is full of dust, bugs, and other junk. I'm gonna take the shop vac to it soon.

I'll be sending off my oil tomorrow for analysis. I'm interested in seeing what the silicon looks like, even though I don't have a before/after.

Just said bye bye to my K&N yesterday; although I can say I found no fine dust or residue in my intake system well except for oil from blow bye on my throttle body. Just feel better having the piece of mind of a better filtering paper filter. Went with WIX, although made in Mexico.

Pulled my K&N panel filter out of the RAV4 on Saturday - the bottom side was peppered with bugs, dandelion seeds, and other miscellaneous debris, but the downstream side of the filter box was clean as a whistle. Toyota puts a gauze screen just above the replaceable filter (I assume just so that if you run without a filter, there's at least something there to keep from inhaling detritus) and you could have eaten off the thing. I'm comfortable with the level of air filtration that K&N gives me, at least in this application.

Mann makes some pretty good paper filters. Take it from a guy that lives in a country where all manufacturers forbid their extended OCIs. It's the best performance while still at a reasonable price. We have Wix here too but everyone goes with Mann/Hummel.

well, i stopped at Napa today, picked up a Napa gold for the silverado and a off name (only thing in stock) in a brown box with black lettering.. for my wifes accord.. im going to tear it all apart again clean everthing and put the paper filters in, run a year, pull it back apart and do another white glove test.. Im not throwing the K&N filters out just yet.. they can go on the shelf in a kroger bag for a year while i complete my test.

I beg to differ.

I have had a k&n drop-in filter for a '92 cherokee and have now 230,100miles now on the jeep.

I clean the throttle body every so often. I have been using a k&n for almost 14years. SO does that mean my jeep has bite the dust? I think not.
That's my 2cents at haters at K&N for a very goo air filter. It's just not good for MAF sensors.

this is the exact reason i replaced my K&N with a Napa Gold today, my MAF connects to my airbox.. ITS ONLY INCHES AWAY.. im a K&N fan too, used them for 15-20 years now, Im conducting my own testing over the next year to see what my MAF and air plumbing look like in a year from now...

yeah, the MAF sensors hate k&n's but other vehicles that don't have them love k&n's.

I had 90,000 miles when I started driving the cherokee. We got it at a dealer after a trade-in of a bronco II. I started driving it in high school and put in a K&N. Haven't regretted that decision one bit. 230,100 miles currently. I change the oil every 3,000 miles and do the necessary maintenance myself.

After reading a couple of the threads on K&N filters, I have finally gotten rid of mine after 4 years and 50k miles. It was due for its first cleaning anyways. I do have to say that I have never had any problems with my filter but I want maximum life out of my engine rather then a couple of HP or even a few MPGs. In fact, this maybe a good time to test how effective the filter was at saving gas as I have been tracking my mileage the last couple years.

Bought myself a Puro classic filter.
