I just added a BMK-13 By-Pass filter system to my 2003 Mercury Marauder. I tell people over on another website that I will be using oil analysis, and looking to change full flow every 6 mo./12,500, and by-pass every 1 yr/25,000, and they about have a cow. I'm running Amsoil S2000 0W30. After reading on this site I think I'm goin to change to S3000 5W30 Diesel when I chang the oil next. Although I read i thread on here somewhere that the S2000 0W30 had pretty good numbers with the by-pass system. (By the way have the same filters that guy with the Subaru had (SDF-15, BE-90).

Someone on another website mentioned that adding the hose and putting the filter further from the engine would lower the pressure. Is this true? If so hom much if I added 2ft of travel to the system? I thought it mastly depended on the flow of the filter. I'm using an AMSOIL SDF-15. Anyone know what the flow numbers are on this filter?

Thanks.

I called Amsoil Tech Support and asked them about oil pressure drop. The guy said that the pressure drop difference was insignificant. I'm skeptical, but I think that the larger full flow filter along with the bypass filter should give you some pretty good flow. I'd be curious if anybody else had firsthand knowledge.

I just bought the same system for my car. I saw some graphs showing the benefits somewhere on this website, and I was sold.

Not by any measureable amount. Two foot (depending on the size of the hose) would probably measure in "inches of water column" in pressure drop. If you're using 1/2" lines ...heck 10 or 20 feet wouldn't lower it that much. The filter will be the most significant restriction.

Thanks guys, thats what I thought. Looking at filters, it looks like the SDF-15 flows as good or better than the stock filter anyway. I do here startup noise for about 1.5-2 seconds. Not to worried though.

I saw a guy when I was at the Amsoil Convention that had a by pass filter system mounted in the back of his PT Cruiser. He had pressure guages on it and it did't look like he was losing any pressure.

Also think about not losing presurre becuase you are using a larger full flow filter. The SDF 15 is bigger than what comes stock, so you should get more flow out of that.

Lastly I wouldn't worry about using Amsoil 0w30. I have had it in my F150 for over 2 year and it's still going strong.

2 Things be sure to change your filters(FF mostly) when you are suposed to. And you will be able to run this oil for a long time.

Another difference between the TSO and the HDD, is that the Hdd does not contain friction modifiers, you should get better MPG figures out of the 0w30. As far as s
short hop driving on the TSO it has a TBN of 12 so you should have no worries about acid, oxidation or any other problems.

Stick with what you are doing you will be fine.

Since I have added my by-pass filter system I here that dreaded ticking sound that others have mentioned. I noticed it on my 1993 Crown Vic when I switched to AMSOIL S2000 0W30. Both engines are 4.6L Fords. I only noticed it on my Marauder (4.6L DOHC) whan I added the by-pass system. I am adding a REAL oil pressure gauge, since some Fords (mine) are coming with the idiot light that looks like a gauge. What did this save them $20.00 per unit. I'm a Ford fan for life, but this is pathetic.

Anyone have any opinions on this, come on, I know you do.

I suspect nearly all vehicles now come with an on/off oil pressure gage. Makes a lot of economic sense to the manufacturer in terms of not being bothered by customers.

Got the gauge installed tonight. Took a little longer than I hoped, but thats what happens when you goof. I made a nice recovery though.

All is working well, and my curiousity about how much my AMSOIL BMK-13 by-pass system would affect pressure is now solid evidence. I am getting no less than 25psi at idle hot, 50psi cruzin' in OD, 62-65psi cruzin' in third, and 67-75psi when I get on it. (WFO)

I am using AMSOIL 0W30. I know this could have some bearing on the pressures that I have documented.

I will now sleep in peace.

Thanks to all who contributed information. I very much appreciate it.

The last comment I read on useing S2K 0w30 was that it is overkill for this application.

Heck, when I ran my first by-pass filter I was running it with Castrol GTX and regular Valovline 10w30.

I think the S2K 0w30 is a good choice, if not the best.

So on your pressure switch, does it measure before or after the dual by-pass?

I'm not sure in the loop where the stock pressure sensor is located. It is off of the oil filter mounting piece, but I'm not sure which circuit. Is it on the OUT TO circuit, or the IN FROM circuit?

I do know in multiple testing that I have done, the FF filter gets hot ALOT sooner than the By-pass does. (The testing was both idling, and quick trips around the block.) This would contridict what was said in the garage testing of the system. I agree with TooSlick. It's interesting that someone in a garage would figure out something that a company who specializes in lubrication would miss.

Based on the pressures I have, I quit worrying about it.
