Buy a new washing machine or no?

3 years would be infuriating to me.

I go 20 years, with repairs.
But the new ones are such junk that 20 years is beyond the realm of possibility. Maybe 10 if you are lucky. I just treat them as disposable now, so if the repair cost is in excess of 50% of replacement, I just replace. Must throw a shout out to my Bosch dishwasher - now approaching 5 years old - miraculous!

The very old machines worked with an open lid. Myself, I would jump across the lid's safety switch and run it without a lid. Unless you have little kids around, then don't attempt.

Get a Speed Queen. $700-900 for laundromat durability. You can even opt for the coin mechanism. 5 Year warranty for everything.
In my opinion, Speed Queen is still in a league of its own as far as traditional built washers are concerned: Solid steel tub and inner tub. Traditional belt driven transmission with all metal gearing. You'll pay more but it is built the old way. Wife bought one in 2016 and I installed myself. The weight of the washer was probably twice that of the one it replaced. Literally built like a tank and manufactured in Ripon Wisconsin. I don't think any other brand comes with a five year warranty, either.

The Speed Queen difference

You can get a Miele with a 10 year warranty. They are designed to last at least 20 years. This only works if a compact washer/dryer works for you though.

I'll say those old GE's can last. We had one that I got used after a divorce. Washer and dryer for $150. Wife made me get her new ones when those were still working good. She thought something was wrong because they got out of balance easily. Bought some Admiral (Whirlpool) ones that are working good. At our other home we have GE cause that is all that will fit in the shallow laundry closet. We had a broken ice maker line while we were on a 10 day vacation. Came back to a destroyed home since 4000 gallons of water came out of that line. Refrigerator was directly above the laundry. After getting our house repaired which took 6 months, Washer and dryer both worked as before. Thumbs up on those GE washers.

That sounds like a night mare. It wants to make me shut off our water while we are away.

We have Samsungs both, washer and drier for nearly 6 years now; they are used i'd say every other day; they are loaded with features but they run like clock; Next time i'd opt for Samsung base models;

back to your question, id say just like with the cars, if you like them and overall they are looking good and your have faith in them for next 8 years, then fix them and move along; on the other hand if you fed up with them, its time to make a short cut

I’m done buying Whirlpool made washing machines. If you were to get the lid fixed, the direct drive system isn’t far from going out.
I would get rid of it and buy a traditional top loader from GE.
I have a brand new GE top loader and it's awful.
The electronic controls are hard to figure out and take forever to respond.
The sound it makes while washing is horrible.
It unbalances while spinning quite often.
My advice is to stay away from GE top loaders.
Now on the other hand the matching dryer is great, go figure.

I agree on GE washers; my parents replaced 2 GE washing machines in past 10 years; however, their GE drier is on 21 years now its just that its basic and old or inefficient, but it gets job done to this day

OP, i'd look for Samsung next time; I just spoke to my wife she says the Samsung is 7 years old now, no issues with them, so I'd opt for an used one or brand one basic model if available and of course if you decide to go that route
