Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) were all killed after a performance during their "Winter Dance Party of 1959" tour. This event inspired Don McLean's popular song "American Pie"....got this from my calendar today.

Let us not forget Ritchie Valens and "J. P." Richardson, Jr., better known as "The Big Bopper".

but you have linkage!

It makes me think of a 1967 song by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band called "Buy For Me The Rain." It is a gorgeous song and it is now on You Tube.

One of the lines is "...the years all hurry so."

It speaks of the ephemeral nature of human life. The years do go by fast. I guess it is the Irish blood in me that makes me love sad songs.

The irony is that Ritchie Valens wasn't even planning to be on the plane. At the last minute, Buddy's bassist traded places with Ritchie.

Who was that bassist? You may better know him from his country music career, a young man named Waylon Jennings...

Grew up in the 50's 98 miles from Lubbock. 60 miles from Littlefield, Waylon Jennings hometown. Things sorta fell silent around high school when we found out.

"but something touched me deep inside, the day the music died"

My dad was a HUGE Buddy Holly fan - I grew up on that stuff, that and Chuck Berry. He was always playing it.

I'm a huge rock fan, and Buddy is right up ther with the greats - he was an amazing guitar player. Modern rockers owe a huge debt to him.

I've got the complete Chuck Berry Chess Box Collection loaded in the Raider's CD changer...

"Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true? You've started back doing the things you used to do. As I was motivatin' over the hill, I saw Maybelline in a Coup de Ville. A Cadillac a-rollin' on the open road. Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford. The Cadillac doin' 'bout ninety-five. She's bumper-to-bumber, rollin' side-by-side..."
