Quick question. My Troy-Bilt power mower Briggs and Stratton engine has a thump while the engine is running. But goes away when the PTO is engaged. What can it be?

Is it an older Troy-Bilt machine?

Is the fuel old?

My guesses would be a slightly dirty carb or old fuel.

Bought in 2007 and my cousin who had it said the fuel is old and he had the carb replaced about a year ago. I am military and was away for over 3 years and he was using it while I was gone.

It's possible. If it's power is good and it's smooth under load I wouldn't worry about it much.

Lots of miss at idle could be something fouling the idle circuit in the carb or could be a leaky or loose gasket between the carb and engine.

Main thing is to keep your stored fuel in sealed containers and not sitting in the (vented) tanks on your equipment.
