Ran a log splitter for about 45 min, and cam melted / broke. Engine was way too hot. Why?

Cooling fins not blocked. Not over reving.

That’s called “Run her till she blows”

A 190cc quantum sounds way underpowered for a log splitter. It was probably wide open on the governor the entire time.

The hydraulic pump makes the splitter not so much the engine .
son in law has a splitter with a 190 cc briggs it has plenty of power.

We do not beleive the pump is overloading the engine. Throttle shaft is 50 percent open and it rotates to 60 or 70 percent open on the governor when it is in a tough cut.

Upon teardown the cylinder and connecting rod look new. Just the gear is blown.

can I use the metal gear in an engine that had plastic?
if it specs and measures out the same I suppose you could. I think you should understand that you may have moved the weakest link to a more expensive part. My guess is B&S did this for cost, but there could be another reason.

The old Briggs quantums had a metal drive gear on the crank and a plastic camshaft. I saw these with red and black plastic no ryme or reason why one color was used. But I think the ones I Rebuilt back in the day had the metal gear formed as one piece as part of the crankshaft.

Then at some point they used plastic. Then offer metal as a service part. So it seems like they knew it fails.
