Anybody knows what engine oil is used for the VW engines during initial running in?

I am caught in this Dilemma, VW specified a low SAPS oil with 504.00 specs which all comes in fully synthetic form.

From what I learnt for summer climate is, best use a monograde mineral oil for breaking in the engine. Like SAE30 which is often used for Diesel engines. I am worried these oil do not protect the turbo bearing well enough or they might have higher SAPS which ruins the emission systems in the car.

Whats the best oil to use for breaking in the engine then?

Thanks

There is nothing to break in. Your engine is already broken in. Just run the factory fill which is probably some 5w30 synthetic for as long as the manufacturer recommends. You'll be fine.

Hello roadrunnerspeed, How long does VW say to leave the initial fill in the engine? My pal bought a Mitsubishi Outlander and they claim that the first oil change should be at 11,500 miles! I find that mileage staggering. What they fill it with at the factory is another question. Kira

The factory fill in TDI diesels is a syn oil made by FUCHS - - this according to a guy on the TDI forum who has visited the VW engine factory in Germany (the cars, I believe are assembled in Mexico). FUCHS is known in Europe as the "factory fill specialist" and does the ff in BMW diesels, as well, even though the service fill is a Castrol oil, as in VWs. I belive the same is true for some of the Mercedes cars. There's a good article by Doug Hillary (a lubricants professional) on BITOG that refers to the importance of ff's and not prematurely dumping the oil. The pertinent part -

"Many modern engines have unique lubricants as their Factory fill and in some cases a special specification lubricant many be needed for the first 100k miles or so. This is for specific “bedding in” reasons and often depends on the engine’s design and certainly on its “wear face” metallurgy! People that chose to ignore the Manufacturer’s advice concerning the first oil change period and the lubricant to be used then are IMO quite foolhardy – especially if they intend to keep their vehicle for many years."

When, according to your owner's manual, it's time for the fIrst oil change (10,000 miles for the latest model VW diesels, I believe) use an oil that meets VW's specs in the manual (504/507 I believe) - - the first oil change is going to be done under VW's free maintenance anyway, right?

My owner's manual specified 5-700 hrs (~17-25000 miles) for oil changes. So I changed it the 1st time at 18000 miles. I found out later when I got very much into lubricating oils that they use Shell Rimula Ultra 10W40, an excellent ultra high performance oil as factory fill on modern Mercedes truck engines (now Rimula Signia for engines with diesel particulate filters).
Now, with my EGR removed, the manual says 1200 hrs is OK (45000 mi), maybe more since the EGR engines came with oil centrifuges. Probably will continue with 5-700 hr changes, unless travelling long distances and my oil is hard to get.
If your manual says change 1st time at 10 or 20000 km, listen to it!

Well, I would not try to out-guess the guys in Wolfsburg. Run the initial fill and, by god, don't put in single grade mineral oil. This is not a lawnmower or a custom chevy v8. If you want to do something good, maybe have them do the first service a while before the OLM tells you to change rather than a long time after.
Also, after you have driven it for a while, do not forget to use the whole rev spectrum of the engine and sometimes let it work hard at different revs, low, mid and near redline. (Whem warm of course)

Just a SWAG here but I would think it is the oil that is currently in the crankcase....just sayin

Unless you bought a car with no oil in it.
