break in oil

my brother also has a volvo 240. We just pulled his motor out and put in forged h-beam rods, new pistons and rings. Along with a brand new turbo. What would be the best break in procedure and using what oil?

I think you could use Rotella to break it in...google turbo-engine break-in procedure and read a few things to get an idea.

Another option is to add some Lucas Zinc break-in additive to your choice of conventional oil (like Castrol GTX). But most people seem to like and of the diesel oils to break in a motor.

Royal Purple now makes a synthetic oil just for breaking in new engines. Too bad their website isn't working now.

I thought modern engines did not really require a so-called break in period?

Well if they are a roller motor, then they do not as much as the older flat-tapper designs did. But when I put an after-market cam in my old '92 Camaro (roller cam), I still followed a break in procedure with Castrol HD 30w conventional oil just to be safe...

Again, ven with the additives in the new RP oil, I'd still feel safer breaking in anything on a thicker conventional oil. Rotella seems to be the favorite around here with the race motor people. Also, he could just usse the conventional oil of his choice and buy the Lucas breaking booster additive and add it to the standard oil. That would give it the added protection needed for break-in.

Well, maybe putting additives in an off the shelf oil is right for this.

However, I'd rather buy an oil that was formulated with every additive in place.

Breakin oil? most glass cutters recommend a little kerosene on the cutter to lube it up, should also work on door/window glass. J/K really J/K.

A GM parts counter should still sell "EOS" (Engine Oil Supplement) an additive used for new engine break-ins. Funny thing is that IIRC GM hasn't used it themselves in new engines for years, but rebuilders still buy it quite a bit.

One take from the article is to run a lower detergent oil during the early stages of the break-in period especially if the FF is replaced before 4k mi. Superflo, ShellFormula, or Chevron Supreme will be my choices on my next new car; Mobil 5000, PYB/QS, and Havoline DS have more detergents than their lower market siblings.

LUCAS also makes a special additive to use for break-in
