Break-in oil change debate

Throw a FilterMag on to the filter housing and then open it up to share the BITOG Porn when you do change it.

What happened to the old school drive it hard ASAP to help keep the pressure on rings to polish off the honing marks? I recall WAY WAY back getting a tour in a GM plant. They were full throttle off the line and full brakes to make sure they worked.

Only recent new I have is the Pilot. I left the factory fill in as per the recommendations here at BITOG with the extra Moly etc. Sonata and Sequoia when new got changes at about 700-1000 with Amsoil EAO filters. FilterMag was put on like day 1 for both (as well as Pilot).

Driving it "hard" doesn't mean WOT and full HP output. The German break-in posted earlier say can go up to 2/3 throttle ... that's pretty hard relatively speaking.

I say leave it.

I was a dump the break in oil early guy, then years of watching fleet vehicles get abused and keep on going changed my mined… I’m a big fan of going with the severe service schedule from day one and moving on with life. Cannot beat the ease and simplicity of it.

The unsolvable debate, change oil soon after purchase or wait for the OCI to say do it. I was going to wait, partly from doubting its necessity with today's engines and partly from cheapness. The local Christian Brothers just announced an oil change special for $14.99, eliminating the cheapness argument, so I'm going tomorrow and get it changed. I'll have ~425 miles or so at that point, enough that any wayward particles should be removed. And small side benefit going forward I'll have July 4th every year as my oil change reminder.
Didn't the vehicle come from the factory with an oil filter?

The wife's 2012 V6 Highlander went 10,000 miles on the factory fill and 10,000 miles on every change since until Covid hit. Since then, I've changed it every year....or so. Currently at 135,000 miles, I'll let you know if dropping the factory fill before it gets warm makes any difference. Early indications are that it doesn't..........

Your engine has an oil filter right? You should watch some engine manufacturing videos on YT. The process is very clean and wear due to parts mating is getting caught in the filter.

I've yet to see anything regarding abrasive wear which is what you're really worried about.

So are you going to get a UOA report as well? Otherwise whats the point? You have no data to know if an early OCI does anything at all.

Christian Brothers is known for high cost high quality repairs, but offering a low $$ oil change is them doing a fishing expedition for other "issues" which you should have none being under factory warranty.

Yes, they are doing it to fish for more work. I would have none. Yes, my car has an oil filter, or at least the shell of an oil filter. I haven't seen inside it to confirm it is actually a filter. No, I would not do a UOA. My thought was what could it hurt to do the change and there is a (very) small chance it might add benefit. I've decided not to go, mainly for not wanting to drive 8 miles to the busy area where they are. I may still decide to do it while their special is on as I don't believe it can hurt anything.

I should maybe add that I drive about 3,000 to maybe 3,500 miles per year. I would change again then unless the OCI surprised me and suggested it sooner.
At that low a yearly mileage, it doesn't matter what you do. The engine will last longer than the rest of the car. Seriously.

Welcome to BITOG :)

You will get alot of satisfaction by doing the following:

1) Change your own oil.
2) Invest in the tools to change your own oil. Harbor Freight will enable you.
3) Read up on this community, and youtube. The topic of oil and oil filters is fascinating.

You must be local and close by, I live in Pflugerville. Nice to meet you. Feel free to PM. Good luck with the ownership!

Well, being Texas I'm close by, just south of Houston about 180 miles or so. I'm beyond the doing it myself phase. My Medicare card allows me to take a pass. :) I'm enjoying the site. It is a lot smarter than I, but I'll enjoy it and pick up what I find along the way.

I've got a 2005 Tacoma that still looks like new, with zero rust because I don't live in a rust area. It will probably look the same another 18 years from now. Only has 52K miles on it.

Your car so you can do whatever you like. If an engine has an issue early and you present the issue to the dealership they will know you have changed the oil and filter. Most likely with low quantity oil/filter based on the prices you were quoted. They will definitely balk. Have the dealership change it. No arguments either way then.

Change it after a few hundred miles. Then your normal oil change interval

Avoid the cheap oil though.
Nasty

No cheap oil (or filter) in that 3cyl ecoboost. Needs robust stuff due to the high power density. Leave the FF for 1200 miles then put some decent synthetic that meets the FORD spec in the O.M. given the belt-in-oil cam drive and countershaft drive. Hopefully "synthetic"
