Brass Reducer in Nissan Vacuum Line....

I was replacing some vacuum lines on my Altima, and I thought one of them had some old hard junk stuck in it.

So, I cut the tube apart (soft rubber) and it had a small brass cylinder that fit inside the tube, and the cylinder had a small hole in it. So, it acted like a reducer of some sort.

Anyone ever find one of these? I'd have to go look, but I think the vacuum line was coming off my EGR or possibly my FPR. I didn't take a pic, but I shoved the fitting into the new vacuum hose and went on my way.

The piece kind of reminded me a tiny brass carb jet.

Anyone know what I'm talking out?

I did some searches on Google, and only found one guy who mentioned it, on an old Datsun...which is of course, Nissan.

Could very well be a flow restrictor to damp vacuum pulses in the line.

An aquarium air tubing valve or the head of a Q-Tip(tm) is a common way to eliminate buzz in mechanical boost gauges, which accomplishes exactly the same thing.

Just like Scurvy said. Just dampens fluctuations in that particular vacuum system. I'd be willing to bet it was for your FPR. You can buy the "restrictors" at any parts store.

Those were very popular in the old days to control vacuum flow to the EGR.Crude devices they were, most had to be added after TSBs or recalls.

Some of the vac lines on my MBs have a dashpot that just is a larger volume. They have different orifice sizes to restrict potential flow rate, and the volume there is like an accumulator to dampen.

I assume yours is the same thing.

I replaced the vacuum hoses in the parking lot at Advance. The brass reducer was in the middle of 6" piece of hose. Right now, it's just a 1/4" further into the hose than the nipple of the EGR. Is this gonna be a concern? I mean, does the reducer need to be in the middle of the hose or anywhere in the hose is fine? ....even if it's dang near butted right against one of the ports?
