99 Malibu fuel regualtor leak

100,200 miles on GM 4 cylinder and check engine light came on. i do all the maintenance i can myself so i decided to do some "lookin" well i found a vacuum hose that had deteriorated so i got that tempo fixed till i can get some hose and the light went off but i notcied while'st i was lookin that the fuel pressure regulator was leaking fuel. so i decide to buy a new one ( $67 ) and try to fix it myself. so i get it apart and when i try to bolt the holder back on under the regulator which i never unbolted that part just the bracket as a whole. i notice that the holder looks to me to be upside down but i try to put it back like it came off and it just done look right. it is not holding the line in the regulator the way it is/was. so i turn it over and all goes well. so my thinking is GM goofed on putting this together. i've owned the car since 30K miles so i'm assuming no work was done before this. when i bought it every receipt for every work done was in the owners manual. oil was changed before 3K everytime. but my point is is this a known problem cause it seems to me that with fule lekaing form a line not installed properly is a bad thing. now looking back i've smelled gas on more than a few occasions but just didnt consider it to be a leaky line. especially one under pressure. wonder how much fuel i've lost over the years. so far it hasnt leaked any the way i have it now. anyone else know of this type probblem ?

There are no service bulletins from GM about this problem, so it's probably not very common. You may have just been unlucky. It's strange that the new one wouldn't fit the same way as the old one, but if it's working properly and not leaking, I'd just roll with it.

thanks i plan to just keep an "eye" on it.

would you happen to know if the other end of the fuel rail comes off. its "nutted" but i turned and turned and it never came apart. the end where the lines come into the rail. i was going to take it apart for ease of assembling the new regulator. so i tuned and turned to tighten it and it never got tight.????? if i had that knowledge i could rely on it more. next friday we have to drive 75 miles to a hospital and want to take it instead of the Mountaiineer to get better gas mileage.
