I finally got the Harbor Freight exhaust pipe cutter for $8.something on clearance, so I wanted to try it out. The clearance cutter only has three cutting wheels instead of four (another one in stock only had two!)

So I picked up a Purolator Classic L14477 just to see how it works. Cutting took a coupes minutes, and here are the results.

None of the cars I change the oil on call for this size filter.

Date code is F08F23E2

Judging from the pics I assume you forced the endcap off the one end. Filter looks ok including the pleating.

As for the HF cutter, 3 wheels are better than 2, but 4 as designed works best. HF closing out the China made cutters. Apparently quality wise not up the pervious made in Taiwan model.

Yes, I forced the endcap off, the end with the cool-looking spider thing on it. I was trying to unravel the media.

I have a 6-cylinder Toyota, which uses the 10241.

Thanks for the reply and explanation of what you were attempting.

The spider looking thing is flat spring type bypass.

Thanks for the pics.

Date code is F08F23E2 = Aug 23, 2014 ... so pretty recent build.

IMO, the media would not have torn on this particular filter, as the pleat V-spread is small, even thought he pleat spacing a a bit large at the seam.

The 'large pleat spacing at the seam' is the problem that causes tears, IMO.

Are they trying to save a nickel's worth of paper?

I won't use Purolator's until the tear issue is resolved for certain.

It's not necessarily the wide spacing, but more so the large V-spread on the pleats themselves. You could have pretty wide spaced pleats with little V-spread (like this particular filter), and the pleats probably wouldn't tear.

Good looking filter.

Thanks for cutting and posting.

Hopefully Purolator has turned the corner on a tough couple of years.

Looks like they have their eye on the ball again.

This filter model had one reported failure, not one of the real problem models. Based on my experience with multiple PL10241's, I would be checking these. I no longer use the 10241 in my vehicles.

Perhaps the bonding agent or whatever they use to bond the filter element is not as good quality as was. Or perhaps they just got a bad batch of that bonding agent and the problem was fixed.

I know the oil companies / oil filter companies have employees that read here sorta like Jay Buckley from FRAM. Bob Is The Oil Guy is Bigger then most people might think...

So my point is IM sure someone from Purolator must read here and seen the problem / IF THEY DIDNT notice the problem themselves and I hope they corrected it.

However I dunno how long for them terolators will take to clear the shelf.

This is why I sorta like the CARTRIGE Style filter.... with them you can see what you are paying for.

Makes you wonder...

Just like that one FRAM EXTRA GAURD that was made by MAHLE but the filter was 10$ and it was cartrige style/ No SPIN on Can Type.

I talked to my granpa the other day and asked talked to him about that and he told me years ago 99% it not all oil filters were cartridge style... However it would take a 10 minutes to 20 minutes to change em...

Then when they came out with the spin on it saved lots of time....

However now they have improved on cartridge style so they are not so hard.

My Great grandpa used to tell me how his first oil filter was a ROLL of Toilet Paper.

The media tearing has nothing to do with the bonding agent material. Rather HOW the pleats are physically positioned/bonded in place.

How will you determine that, pray tell?

When Purolator acknowledges the issue.

Spoken like a fanatical Framite.

To be contrarian, I don't think it looks so super good, because having no potted media at all even looks better to me, like the Densos. Secondly the Fram Ultras I got recently aren't as well finished as Purolators, nicks and scratches on the end plate, a 1/4 " long metal shaving, and generally not as good fit and finish IMO. But the media is what counts. I have turned my back on any Puro or clone like others. I don't want to guess everything's fine, that maybe there are no tears.
