"How to Keep Your VW Alive" is a good basic book. The ex got to keep the 69 VW that I rebuilt before we started college, thinking that we wouldn't have to worry about the car for awhile. It worked but the car lasted much longer than the marriage, and the last time that I saw her she still had the car. She said that the last time she took it in for a tune up the mechanic said that he'd never seen a VW in that good of condition with that many miles on it. Just a careful rebuild with balanced parts, a full flow oil filter and accessory oil cooler, with the help of a fun book.

Maybe it also helped that I had been working on motorcycles for a few years.

Pablo - Remember to grease your brake pad facings and leave your brake caliper attachment bolts loose [to self align].
Also, loosen the bleeders screws before driving so there are no pressure spikes.

Also grease the pad abutment clips.
