Will the catastrophic oil spill on the Gulf Coast influence you to boycott BP products or will it have no impact on your decisions on their products ?

I will continue to purchase their products. Does anyone think they wanted this to happen? The cost to BP will be enormous, a disaster financially as well as ecologically. Do remember that mother earth will eventually heal itself.

Absolutely not, AFAIK it was a complete accident and they are doing everything they can to stop it.

With all that said, I've never used BP products much before, and am currently not using any right now.

I do not Boycott BP in anyway, although I posted that on another topic. I believe that they are doing all they can. It was a tragic accident and although they have had "issues" in the past, they are the largest oil producer and I am sure very much in the sites of every environut. I also would wish to remind people that the oil crude you see coming out of the ground is very much a natural substance, its not a chemical spill of manmade juices. Its a all natural crude and will be taken care of by the Earth. Exactly what is the approach on the Volcano in Iceland, that seems to get a free pass. I think I would prefer to deal with oil sludge then ash laden air. Oh, I forgot we have that rich evil oil company to blame, probably in cahoots with those evil tobacco companies, no doubt.

According to the book I'm reading, Henry Ford helped support Adolf Hitler into making a slave labor camp in 1939. Ford was so happy with Hitler's success, he gave Hitler $50,000 for his 50th birthday.

But you know what?? I"d still buy a Ford Mustang!!

As far as I know, they don't sell anything around here. They use to have BP gas stations, but they were not successful. They may have sold them, or just changed the name. I would not boycott their products because of the oil spill, but I have been boycotting their product because they are an English owned company with a long history of abuse in other countries.

It was an accident, but there was a lot of incompetence at the very top. It had nothing to do with the men working on the rig.

Uh... BP owns ARCO

since the year 2000.
ARCO

It hasn't changed my opinion of oil companies in the slightest.

The oil spill has increased my already considerable disdain for the tree hugging eco algore crowd that has forced oil production off of land and out of shallow off shore waters into the deep oceans.

Can't produce oil in the arctic where, like, three people live, instead they're forced to produce it in mile deep water where a leak can adversely impact millions, not to mention the flora and fauna.

Brilliant.

Not.

Really? That's hard to believe ... unless you're referring to off shore drilling vs tar sands/oil shale. Maybe this will renew interest in those sources of energy (thinking of the shale around Montana, Colorado et al).

Of course not, but the facts surrounding gross, blatant negligence in the operation of the Deep Water Horizon is enough to convince me they care more about profit then safety. I'll never again buy a BP made product.

And how is it profitable for BP to be unsafe leading to deaths and accidents?

Tell us how BP is making a profit from this disaster. It's stock is down. It's being boycotted. It said it would pay for the cleanup. And the Federal Govt is considering passing unconstitutional legislation to fine the snot out of them. ("No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed." - US Constitution)

I realize over the past few years, big oil has made record profits. But at some point you need to ponder whether BP will survive this and what implications BP going the bankruptcy route will have on the already fragile market. Some are probably shaking their heads saying BP makes billions and billions every quarter. If this thing keeps pumping out oil until August when the relief well is complete, I'm predicting BP will be no more. The absolutely enormous clean-up costs, never-ending lawsuits and hefty government fines will even be too much for them. Then we need to think about who will pick-up the final clean-up cost (do you really need a hint?).

Boycotting has no impact on a big oil company. The oil is going to be bought. The boycotted oil company just sells the product to another big oil company that isn't being boycotted.

My extreme disappointment in this mess is that there were (appeared to be) no significant preparation for such an instance. The first thing they tried (the sucking up the oil device) took to long to get there, did they have to fabricate it first? The first use seemed to be the first test. The second thing they tried (the sealing attempt) also didn't work. Too much uncertainty. What's the next plan? Do they have one? They should have plans A, B, C, D, E... etc. etc. "in the can" and ready to go. That would just be sound engineering. It's like "the gang that couldn't shoot straight".

God help us if they don't learn from this mess.

Bottom line BP has knowingly and purposely broken a huge number of safety, environmental, and proceedural laws that apply to every aspect of their business.

I would bet that a number of top BP execs will be tried for criminal negligence and negligent homicide as well....
long jail sentences are looking increasingly likely for these Ivory tower criminals.

regardless of how folks "feel" or their "opinion" ,BP willfully and intentionally BROKE THE LAW!
....and it resulted in people dying!

If I lived closer to you, I would hug you. I am with you 100% . Everyone wants to blame BP, the oil companies and the Government, I think the enviromentalists need to look in the miror along with all these retired eco freaks in Florida, that just cant stand to see a oil rig(dont mind seeing gas stations though) well, enjoy, you dont have to see oil rigs and you dont have to apply suntan lotion, the water will oil you up.

The enviromentalists and the eco freaks want to stop all oil drilling on the ground or under the sea, they also want to close all gas stations and coal and nuclear power plants tomorrow if they have the power to do so. They want us to live as our ancestor lives 5000 years ago.

i probably won't buy fuel off BP for a while.

i believe from my joe bloggs point of view it was not a totally unpreventable accident or act of god. they could have done better. they didn't in the name of expedience/profit/call it what you will.

in any case, they are always the most expensive fuel in my town. I'll stick with Caltex (subsidiary of Chevron Texaco) and independents.
