Is this normal?

I bought a new refrigerator top, and the freezer is on the bottom. The manual has default setting at "4 fridge/4 freezer" and max cold is "7". I had to turn up the freezer to a "5" to get correct freezer temps. The refrigerator I had to go all the way to "7" to get the thermometer out of the danger zone.

I'm using the mercury style thermometers.

Yes.

link to fridge type?

on mine if you turn the fridge up the freezer is warmer.. and if you turn the freezer up the fridge is warmer.

is it possible you were checking the temps right after a defrost?

+1

And were the mercury thermometers calibrated?

Most new appliances are junk compared to older ones. I would have kept my my 94' side by side if the compressor wasn't banging when it cut off.

I wouldnt say junk. The do use half the power though. efficiency has to come from somewhere.

many of the fancy $2000 ranges ones are terrible.. last 2-3-4 years and are unrepairable.

Same story with front loading washers. Pick carefully or regret it.
