Bought a new Camera

Or my first digital camera.

Picked up this bad boy for $268 from DBuys. No tax or shipping charges.

The official release date for the camera is 4/1/07, so I'll be one of the first people to own it. As a result, I paid top dollar for the product as cameras are sold for full price upon introduction, but even then, I think I did OK considering that I paid a couple bucks less than MSRP.

However, I think I regained any losses from the purchase of my memory card:

$34.99 after mail-in rebate from Amazon. No shipping charges or tax. Saved AT LEAST $30 on the memory card.

Thoughts on the purchase? Did I get a good price? Was this a decent camera or did I fall victim to blind perception of quality products from Canon?

I got a Canon Powershot A540. My previous digital camera was also a Canon, Powershot A70 which broke because dropped it. These are great cameras has a lot of functions including video and sound. Easy to use and easy to navigate menus. My only complaint is the somewhat shutter lag, should be improved in newer models so have to be very steady when taking pictures.

Yeah with rebate not a bad price. Get some rechargeable NiMH AA batteries, a camera bag and you are ready to go. Have fun with it.

I bought an SD800is a few months back. It has been great for the family pics I take. My old camera wouldn't focus well indoors and was slow to take the picture once you press the button. I missed a lot of shots my daughter because of it. The new cameras by Canon are really fast. They focus much faster and better in low light and the picture is almost instant when you push the button.

I never see any high end digitals hit the discount shelf (perhaps it's what I consider the discount shelf). Any of the lower grade cameras alway are ..sooner or later.

Critic, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. All the A-series Canons have always offered good bang for the buck. I still have an old A20 that I bought back in 2002. My sister has an A520 that I bought for her in 2005, and it's great, too.

Awesome deal on that memory card. I remember just a little over a year ago paying $80 for a 1 gig version of that card.

I want an SLR. It leaves point-and-shoot cameras in the dust, like...badly.

I like my new digital Sony 10.2 megapixel a lot. My other camera is a 35 mm Canon F1. I bought that back in 1978 so I'm one of those knuckle draggers that hates change.

The camera is $266.07 on Amazon.com and other places I looked at. So you got a good deal. 3 out of my 5 sisters own a Canon Powershot - one of which was one I bought about 3 years ago. They are GREAT cameras for the normal/semi-serious picture taker. After my first Canon I went and purchased a pricey Olympus SP-350. If I could go back in time - I'd have gotten another Canon Powershot

So I still got a better deal.

I have a Yasihca 35mm SLR I bought overseas back in the late 60's, some day maybe they will offer a digital SLR body that all my lenses will fit.
