Well, the M1s have a bypass. But in order for your GM to work properly, you have to use a spec GM filter. If you have a filter that gets a little plugged, it will probably want to go into bypass before the system bypass operates. What then, if there is no bypass in the filter? Will the pressure blow through the filter? I'm not sure how that is supposed to work; I think I'd rather have the Ford system with filter bypass.
