Is this a "clicker" one or not. Not sure exactly what I am looking at here.

Definitely NOT a clicker. I was able to push it open a little with a little pressure, midway with medium pressure, and all the way with full pressure.

Too bad they looked great inside except for the two pieces of sheet metal pressed together with holes in one of them, that is the bypass valve

Interesting. I guess it's size-by-size with the BPs. Below is a picture of the guts of the Bosch Premium that fits the Nissan/Infiniti VQ35 V-6 (which powers my G35). Unfortunately, I didn't try to get a pic of the other side of the valve, but it is a progressive, spring-loaded mechanism. I know, I've got my pinky stuck in it. . .

I guess the morale is that we can generalize by brand, but we need to look at filters on a model by model basis.

Well clearly Bosch Premium filters vary by model. Looking inside mine, I saw a somewhat large, robust looking spring. This spring would take the place of that stamped piece of sheet metal in that picture. If you have a preference (surely BITOGers do) then just open the box and look inside the filter!

Do the filters have the "clicker" type bypass valve? If memory serves, I remember someone experiencing difficulties with clicker type bypass valves not flowing well enough in extremely cold weather for his application. I'd consider using a filter with a more positive coil spring type action for the colder winter months unless you have an accurate oil pressure gauge where you can monitor what's going on.

May-be you were refering to me.I had a Bosch Premium on for a week in cold weather and it played havoc with my oil pressure warning beeper and the dash warning light at start-up on my 2001 Jeep

.Using the Wix "Sport Truck" filters now, with the baseplate by-pass, and everything went back to normal. After dis-assembly of the Bosch filter the innards looked well made except for the POS "clicker" by-pass valve.Would never put one on another car I service...NO-WAY!

There's a substantial difference between the basic Bosch and the "Bosch Premium." I have not cut up your size Bosch Premium, but I have cut up the one that fits the Nissan/Infiniti VQ35DE 3.5L V-6, and its bypass is definitely NOT a clicker type. Are you postive that wasn't a "regular" Bosch? I'm not interested in getting into one of those "I'm right and your not" exchanges, but I do occasionally recommend these to friends, and if some Premiums have a clicker, that would give me something to think about.

There's a robust spring inside the disassembled filter shown in my picture too. It's on the other side of the little black "dot" (which is the actual bypass valve) which you can see on top of the filter element in my picture. Unfortunately, the remnants of that filter are in my BOQ room in New Orleans, and I'm home in Pensacola until Wednesday, so I can't supplement the pic until then. The sheet metal part you're looking at keeps the entire element pushed down on the base plate. When you autopsy this filter, you find it between the top of the can and the element.

Here's a picture of a Bosch with a clicker bypass valve.

There is another design that has the bypass valve at the baseplate end of the filter. I'll leave it to someone else to find pictures of this design.

The Bosch Premiums share the exact same "skeletal structure" as the Mobil 1, STP, Supertech, K&N and several others. This is based upon my cutting all of them apart myself with a pipe cutter. I can't speak to the element itself (they all vary a little in color and texture), but the BP is a very stout, well put together product.

The filtering media is different. I noticed the same thing you did when I cut a bunch of filters open, but I went a step further and found info that proved they were different.

I really need to update my page...

Aren't the clicker bypass valve a recent development? Their might be old stock of the slow moving filter models that still have the old valve.

i think the bosch filter that are made in germany are kinda like K&N filters, with a heavier can and a nut welded on the end.

I agree. Bosch Premiums are good filters. I have dissected one, and have seen for myself that it is a typical Champion Labs product. The element is a slightly different color than the M1, and I can't speak to its performance. I think it's also important to note that apparently, there's a difference between the standard Bosch, which is a mixed bag of products from different places, and the Premiums, which, so far as I've seen, are all Champ Labs products.

Does Champion Labs also produce filters in Mexico?

My local AutoZone had Bosch Premium oil filters that were Made in USA and Made in Mexico. The exterior appearance of the filters themselves looked identical.

I'm making a switch to Mobil 1 with the infamous "Buy 3 get 3 Free" PP coupons.

I know the evil Orange can is a no-no.

Is Bosch a good filter for extended OCI's with Mobil 1?

The 5.3 is in a '00 Silverado w/ 19k miles. I was changing it only once a year because the "Oil Change Light" never came on and the most it was driven in a year was 6k miles. I want to use M1 and change it when the light comes on.

The 4.6 is in a '01 Grand Marq w/ 26k miles. It gets 5w20 conventional every 5k miles now. I want to use M1 w/ 7500 mile OCI.

Are the Bocsh filters up to this? After the free Bocsh for the Marq is up, I will probably go back to my stock of FL820-S's reserved for my '96 Vic.

Has anyone used Bosch Premiums before?

Who makes them, Champion?

I don't know about Bosch, but Purolator Pure Ones can handle long OCIs. One of the best filters on the market.

I'm trying a Bosch Premium for the first time right now on my '90 Voygager oil-burning smoker of doom.

I tend to change the oil fairly often on that one (or at least dump in more Pennzoil 5w30), since it burns a lot anyway, so I'm not worried about long intervals.

jthorner - Thanks for the info.

The USA and Mexico-made ones did look identical from the outside.
