Bosch filters

I was at AZ comparing oil filters for my 1998 Ford SVT Contour, which specs a Motorcraft FL-820s (which BTW...I've used for the life of the car so far). I picked up a Bosch filter, and the construction looked good, and oil holes inside the canister looked to enhance flow (though it didn't appear to have a silicone ADV). But when I put the 2 filters side by side, the MC was more than 1/2" longer than the Bosch! I was fairly surprised at that. And yes...it was the correct filter for this application.

The Bosch filter is reported to be made by Champion Labs, who also make filters for STP, Mobil 1, and K&N. That is not to say that they are the same though. The main thing is that Champion Labs has a good reputation and makes quality filters.

You Motorcraft FL850S is made by Purolator and has some of the same internals as the PurOne. It is not identical inside though unlike the relationship between the Motorcraft FL1 and the corrosponding PurOne.

I suspect that the Motorcraft FL820S has a better filter media than the Bosch. The FL820S filter media is comparable to PurOne, Mobil 1, and K&N.

I usually use either the Motorcraft FL820S or a PurOne on my 98 Contour SVT. Very rarely I will use something different. I currently have 200,000 miles on the SVT.

As my curiosity about such things has grown, I've now acquired myself a pipe cutter and started dissecting filters, both used and new to see what they're made of and how they seem to perform. Just so happens that I cut a new Bosch apart last night. The Bosch is virtually identical in skeletal structure to the other Champion Labs products (M1, K&N, VC, STP, etc.). Compared to the more expensive M1, the Bosch has the black nitrile ADBV and has a paler colored filter medium. It has the same sturdy metal end caps that are welded (or otherwise immovably bonded) to the center tube. I've seen some folks here talk trash about Bosch quality, but I now don't accept that. It is a well-built filter that should be just fine so long as you don't have an absolute need for the silicone ADBV.

I forget the name, but I found it a Pepboys in the heavy tools (for lack of a better name) section. Comes shrink wrapped to a red and white cardboard display package. It feels good in hand, and as long as you don't use it on something flimsy (like a Fram) it cuts beautifully. Cinche the cutters down a little, give it a couple turns, tighten a little, a couple more turns, repeat a couple times and the filter comes apart cleanly.
