BMX X5 4.4 overheated

A friend of my wife's drives an X5 4.4 of an unknown-to-me model year. Probably 2003 vintage. My wife told me today that her friend overheated it, and it's in the shop now. Diagnosis not yet completed. She said her friend admitted that it was "her fault". I said that she may have compounded a problem by continuing to drive with the needle in the red, but there had to have been a failure on the vehicle's part for it to have happened in the first place.

Is there any precedent for this? I know NOTHING about BMWs. Is an overheated engine in these usually traced to one problem, like a failed head gasket? I figure that the coolant fans or relay likely failed, which started the whole scene. I'm interested to find out the diagnosis. I hope she doesn't have to have the heads milled. I don't know how badly she overheated it. It did have to get towed to the shop, so it was disabled somewhere.
 
not enough info to extrapolate much.

I only know them into the early 90's when I swore I'd never buy another.

They seem fragile to me.

I find it surprising that my cheap low tech vans can lose ALL coolant and still be driven without damage. Yet this newer SUV has probably done thousands of dollars worth of damage to the engine.
 
The M62 engine family runs at 108C in normal conditions. This creates relatively high temperatures and pressures in the cooling system. When you get up to around 100k miles, sometimes less, plastic components will need replacing. There are usually warning signs - typically the float level stick in the expansion tank might snap off or something. At that point replace the e-tank and rad (the parts aren't very expensive).

My experience is from the E39, not the X5, but it's the same engine. Not sure how much of the cooling system is replaced. By contrast, my M52 engine runs at 93C in normal conditions and my identical cooling system plastic parts are fine for 13 years now.

I really don't consider the fact that you can drive a "cheap van" with no coolant a selling point for a cheap van. They're also low tech, inefficient, and no fun whatsoever. I've never said to myself "I wish I was driving a cheap van instead of this BMW because then I could neglect it." No vehicle should be driven with the temp in the red and no coolant. If that's what the owner did, it could get really expensive. The M62 is much more tolerant to overheating than any of the BMW inline 6s but...
 
ummmm, youre REALLY comparing a van engine (likely iron block and heads) to an advanced, far higher power density high-end vehicle engine (aluminum block and heads likely)?!?

Irrelevant. Any vehicle these days that has an aluminum bloc and heads or an iron block with aluminum head is prone to severe damage should overheating occur. The head will warp and need to be removed and made straight again, this means a headgasket job.

Makes me amazed that they give more and more damped or even dummy lights for monitoring temperature. Likely because people dont have a clue, but it is important for this to be flagged when one is dealing with an aluminum engine.

The car is getting a bit older. Most any make's plastic/aluminum radiators can be prone to leaking/cracking. That, a bad set of hoses, a potential plastic water pump impeller (which can self-destruct) all are makings of a failure. Top it with the typical woman driver's mash the go pedal disrespect for physics, and there is more wast heat to do damage.

Why she didnt stop is beyond me. Unless it was an unsafe area or a place with no shoulder to pull off, she should have stopped and been more careful. She now gets to pay for her haste.

Im a bit surprised that the BMW didnt go into a limp home mode to self-protect.
 
That engine needs its owner to keep close track of the cooling system. There was probably a relatively small problem (e.g. water pump or leaky thermostat housing) that went unnoticed or unaddressed for far too long.

They are tough engines, but if it got to the point that the car was disabled then I would not be optimistic.

I was going to razz you for this comment - but now I might guess that BMW may have some of their "high Tech" prioritized to the wrong places on the car. No BMW fanboy, as my VANOS broke on my 98 M-Roadster at onlt 68K miles. That car was the best (ne: most fun!) sports car I'd driven up to this point. As an aside, Negative Points for most all manufacturers in running engines too hot - but I guess EPA and CAFE drove them there ...

Ooooh, here come the BMW folks. No fun in our vans. Just ONE of them can make me about 3500.00 a week. They are all business! If we tried to run BMW's we would be gone! Fragile and over priced, both for purchase and repairs, is my opinion of BMW's in general. And your rebuttal is hilarious, as if a business owner running for a profit would want a BMW? Not a smart and successful one.

And 108 is not really hot at all. No excuse for failures like I read about all over with BMW's and their cooling systems.

WRONG answer. I bet if you check you can't find a V8 made anywhere that does NOT have aluminum heads, regardless of block material. almost everything made is aluminum heads, period. It's the dissimilar metal engines that are worst in this regard, not the all one metal kind. Late model GM truck motors really can be run without coolant with no damage, as they flip flop 4 cylinders back and forth to avoid warping the ALUMINUM heads.

These van engines ARE pretty high powered, making around 400 foot pounds of RELIABLE torque and hauling around a 9000+ pound vehicle for at least 250k miles (average) without any major repairs. One I drive five days a week has over 400k miles on it. No smoke, no oil consumption, and 16 mpg! Just hitch another BMW up to yours and let me know how long it lasts!

I would bet you could compare almost any car to a BMW and show lower cost of ownership. I've had a few, and after the experience I swore never to buy them again. They may be even worse than Mercedes to own long term.

As for power density and/or performance, my Chrysler has stood up well to my buddy's new M3, all the way up to over 150 mph. I'm sure some of that is due to his fear of it breaking if he flogs it! Yet we have cars identical to mine with nearly 200k miles on them and all original running gear.

Enjoy yours. But my opinion remains. Fragile, overpriced, and expensive to own. Better trade early.

Fair enough. I'm a big fan of BMW's and that has not been my experience. People are not buying BMWs for low cost transportation. There's an esthetic/performance value people are willing to pay extra for...just like those who buy SRTs. The comparison between SRTs and BMWs is like apples to oranges. They are bought by different kinds of people with different likes/dislikes/preferences - to be sure. I for one share the opinions that the car magazines have consistently putting BMW products in the "best of" class year after year.

At the same time, SRTs are not cheap transportation either.
 
Wow. Flaming aside, I appreciate those who took the time to explain how this particular BMW engine runs. 108*C is 226*F; running at that temperature all the time does seem pretty warm. Most modern vehicles tend to run 180-200*F it seems.

No update on this Bimmer yet. My wife said we'll see them in church on Sunday, so I guess I'll know more then. It sounds like if it's overheated badly, it'll necessarily require a head gasket job and head milling. I'm sure that won't be cheap.

We'll see. I'll update when I know more.
 
I'm pretty sure you can warp the heads on ANY engine if you drive it without coolant long enough. Sure, some engines can alternate cylinders blah blah blah... but they're in vehicles that I would never want to drive or otherwise maintain. And it certainly doesn't mean that the rest of the car is well designed.

I've owned various 3-series for the last 14 years and the cooling system is something one has to watch. But to compare it to some van? That's a really poor argument and a great example of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Some might even say it's h8ing.

Odds are the expansion bottle cracked, just like they all do. If one does simple preventative maintenance and replaces the bottle every 5-7 years they will never have a problem.
 
My wife just called and I guess her friend's Facebook page says that it needs a water pump, a hose, and a belt. $1,500. Sounds like she didn't blow it up too bad. I'd be surprised if that engine was right, but I'm sure they pressure-tested the cylinders to measure head gasket integrity.

They do park it on their concrete driveway, so I'm sure they would have perceived a leak. Or maybe that's why she said it was her fault, maybe she knew it had a coolant leak and kept driving it. Maybe the coolant washed the bearing, the water pump seized, and it took out the belt also. At that point, she was probably forced to stop and call the wrecker.

To the OP, I'd have to say that it doesn't sound good. As others have mentioned, cooling system maintenance seems to be a big prerequisite for these. I almost pulled the trigger on an E39 wagon, and in researching it, one thing I realized is that by 100K replacing the plastic parts on the cooling system would be a requirement. It is unfortunate that her car didn't force itself into limp mode before any real damage was done. It's hard to imagine the head not being warped, given the scenario you describe.
 
wow, that's good to hear, and surprising! I reminds me breaking my timing belt in an interference engine and not doing any damage...

She's lucky. That's a huge bill for that repair, but it's a good thing for her that there was no real damage.

With the number of cooling system issues that many late-model BMWs have, a complete rebuild of the system every 75k or so with a new water pump, radiator, tank, cap, t-stat, hoses, belts and belt tensioners, even at around $1200, is cheap insurance compared to engine failure.
 
BMWs wouldn't have the expensive reputation they do if people shopped around. I replaced my m54's h2o pump, expansion bottle, and some hoses last year for about $200 in parts and about two hours of my time. A good independent tech can keep the car affordable.

I'm glad she didn't cook her motor. The lesson is to be proactive with the maintenance of a high-performance motor. The fact that the driver accepts responsibility without blaming the manufacturer speaks very well of her.
 
Thanks for the link. I will forward that to them; there may be some things they need to replace while they're in there doing the water pump.

She's very lucky. Typically, by the time the needle reaches the red, serious engine damage has been done.

The moment you see the needle wander to the right of 12 o'clock is the time to pull over and stop driving. The coolant gauge has a dead range from 75C to 115C. So, when it starts moving, you're already exceeding 115C. I made this informational diagram a while back to illustrate how it works...

That's rather unusual. My M54 runs at about 96C, and I've started developing coolant leaks by the time the car was 7 years old and had 55k miles. At 8 years and 70k miles when the coolant expansion tank cracked, I decided to do a complete cooling system overhaul.
