He's not unloading it; that's the entire premise of his post.
If you're looking at a V8 BMW, drive it around until it's hot, then let it idle for 10-15 minutes. Make sure it doesn't overheat and look for blue smoke leaving from a stop off long idle.
If it's good and hot (like just off a highway drive) let it idle for a while then park it for 15-30 minutes if time permits, then look for blue smoke at start.

Agreed with the OP on not buying BMW V8s. Between timing chain guide problems and valve seal issues they can be pretty expensive to own compared to the I-6's.

Those 740s are the way to go.
The N54 is much smoother compared to the V8. Had an '11 740i Individual and it was a flawless car.
