2004 BMW 3 series, power steering calls for Dexron III, Dexron VI apparently is not compatible in power steering applications, what would one use?

Yes.

FWIW, Mobil 1 Mercon ATF is also "recommended for power steering systems specifying "DEXRON or MERCON fluids" or something, IIRC...

I always 'assumed' Dexron VI superceded all old applications, did not catch the part that it does not in P/S applications. Will go the Mobil 1 Mercon V route, thanks folks.

Those Recommended for Dexron III fluid (i.e. Valvoline Maxlife or Chevron MD-3) are good enough, it's just a power steering so friction property isn't critical.

Dexron VI is too thin so it isn't that great of a replacement.

thanks PandaBear, I thought I might splurge and use Mobil 1 synthetic atf mercon V, what is a dollar or so either way. Should have asked at the forum first......
