Does anyone know what these oils actually are? I need G5 for front axle and G4 for rear axle. OE is about $60 for 1/2 litre at the dealer . Lots of companies list an equivalent for the G4, but the G5 seems to be much less common. BMW switched the front diff requirement to G5 from G2 a few years ago for most (if not all) of the X-Drive vehicles.

I think they are Shell or Castrol

When I go to Revenols site for example and search by application it tells me the front diff oil for my vehicle is a special product (it's the G5) - I'm just wondering what it actually is. Probably 75w80 or something. If I search for a year older they do have a recommendation which is their G2 equivalent.

Probably Fuchs

Maybe. FUCHS supplies factory fill for a few automakers in Europe which is why I suggested them.

Here's what FUCHS recommends.

So from what I can gather, G5 is 75w85 without friction modifier, while G4 is 75w80 with FM... Both are GL-5. I haven't been able to totally confirm that but it is probably correct. Seems weird they would use 80 grade in the rear diff of an M and 85 in the front though.

I would swallow pill and just use OE fluid.
I experiment with various fluids, but never in transfer case in E series. Always their DTF-1.

Maybe it's not a bad idea to reach out to Redline or Bimmerworld to get the scoop; I would imagine there have to be alternative fluids that work. I know rear diffs for M cars are picky though.

My BMW motorcycle specs a 70W80 GL5 for its final drive. Go to your local Jeep dealer and buy this quart for $19 USD. I wasn’t going to pay $60 for a 1/2 quart of the BMW branded oil.

This is answer that I got from my friends at Motul:
BMW G4 & G5 have been a stickler for me and the team here as there has been little movement from HQ. According to our technical manager, G4, used with differentials with limited slip, our Gear 300 LS 75W-90 is an appropriate replacement, but G5, we just don't have much information on that fluid to safely make a recommendation on.
