I need 255/35 R18 tyre choice for a stock BMW Individual (M Sport) 325ci coupe. Want reasonable life and good wet weasther braking/handling. All tyres are good in the dry IMO so wet weather is important. Any ideas?

For flat-out best wet weather performance, I would look at Goodyear F1 GSD3. However, with a treadwear index of 280, it's not a particularly long-lasting tire. I guess there's always a tradeoff. What is your definition of "reasonable life"? If you rotate them, you should be able to get 20-25k miles out of them.

Alternatively, if you want something longer wearing, look at the Goodyear F1 All Season. Not sure if they're available in Australia though.

I also suggest the Goodyear F1 GSD3

It is the most impressive tire I have ever run, hands down.

Best tire I know of in rain, and gives up very little dry performance over dry specialized tires that are almost scary in wet.

I promise you won't be dissapointed.

I got 45,000 miles out of my F1 GSD3 in a 225-45-17 with a semi aggressive driving style (when I drove it). The car was my wife's daily driver with lots of short, city stuff. I was really impressed with how long they lasted. Sticky and quiet to the end (replaced with 3/32 remaining).

Currently running the F1 A/S in the same 225-45-17 size. Only about 4k on the tires so it's too early to tell about treadware. Good match for my application at this point and I plan on getting another set for my little xD when the time comes. The carbon fiber sidewall can be a tad harsh when the tires are cold but on decent highways, they are smooth as glass. I had one out of round replaced under warranty but no other issues. I'm due for a rotation/balance in a couple months so we will see if anything else surfaces.

I ran up 16,000 miles on my Focus before rotating. I did not measure the tread depth, but just looking at them, I figure I had used up about 2/3d's of the tread on the front tires, while the backs had too little used to notice. I'd guess the fronts would have hit the wear bars at around 22-24k miles. I'm expecting to get about 40k out of them, and I drive it like I stole it.

This a front-driver, so it eats up front tires much faster than a RWD car, I find that, even without rotations, a front-engine RWD car is much more balanced about treadwear, unless you have a high hp car and use the power.

I don't know how spirited your driving is, but I find that treadware is very similar among different tires for me, simply because I break the harder compound tires lose more often. On my Impala, which is the only car I've worn multiple sets of tires out with, I average about 28k miles per set, with treadwear ratings ranging from 280-400. I often do powerslides with that car though. I think the GSD3 would actually give me longer life, but it does not come in the stock size. If I keep the car long enough to go through the current set of Kumho 712s, I'll be looking at the 255/45-17 GSD3, which is a bit shorter than the 50 series stocker.

I would look at Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires. Tirerack and others rate them very high in wet weather performace. I put them on my car very recently and they perform very well in rainly conditions. Not sure if they are available in your size.

sprintman,

If you can get Bridgestone Potenza RE050As in Oz I'd say take a look at them, they're available in the sizes you mentioned. I have a set of Potenza RE050A Pole Positions on my old Porsche and they're great. In fact I've been getting excellent results with Bridgestones these days, all our cars are shod with them. In addition to the aforementioned RE050A PPs, I've got a set of Potenza RE750s on my wife's car and my daily driver has a set of Expedia S-01s.

Excellent tyres

Don't know, but they definitely aren't long life tires. They'll probably last you around 30,000 kilometers.

The Pole Position 960AS (Bridgestone) is also a good tire and should last you quite a bit longer. Also consider the Pilot PS2s by Michelin.

How long do you want them to stay quiet? Unfortunately in this size (255/35 R18) no performance tire will stay quiet for too long. Once it wears down a bit, say within 15k miles, you can expect any tire in this size to begin howling.

Hmmm not the answer I wanted but good. Any other choices in 255/35 18 or 225/40 18 anybody can reccomend? Quitish reasonable grip and wear. Don't need 'Ultra high Performance' that this size seem to fit in to.

Huh? How do you know that?

Failed the car inspection test you have to have when transferring registration on car 6yrs or older as rears not enough tread. Panic! Give me a aetof F1 GS D3 says I. quick check on the computer and there is one in Au. Discontinued in 255/35 18. Bridgestone RE050A way too expensive. Quickly runing out of options.

How about Pirelli PZero Nero M&S. It has a UTQG of 400.

Great tire according to those who have used it.

Yup. Although probably as expensive as the Bridgestone RE050.

How about Avon M500 or Kumho ASX?

ASXs are cheap, but they won't last.

PZeros cost 10% less than RE050s. The Goodyears actually cost more than the RE050s on Tirerack.
