Blending Sustina 0w20 with another 0w20?

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering about what is compatible with Sustina 0w20? I have read about Caterham's blend and find it tempting for a 0w30 application but wondering about a resultant 0w20 blend. The only real reason for asking this question is the rather high price of Sustina around here, provided you can find it. My sense of logic may be a bit off here, but I figured I'd ask

I'm thinking of potentially mixing it with one of the following:

Toyota 0w20
Idemitsu 0w20
M1 AFE 0w20

Which would be the most chemically compatible? Would there be a mix that should be avoided in terms of VIIs?

Thanks!

Oil is compatible with...oil! I wouldn't hesitate to mix any of it really. Most people would probably say just running Toyota 0W-20 would be best for basically any 20wt application though.

one type of additive pack + totally different additive pack = the blend being worse than original.

no idea why you would hunt up 13$/qt oil and mix it.

if you are going to do that at least buy 2 of the same brand and series..

ie 3qt 0w20 1qt 5w50 sustina..

I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish here.

This is a 0w30 application and you want to use a 0w20?

If so, I guess I just don't understand the need for mixing. TGMO would likely be the cheapest out of those four and should do a fair job on it's own. Mixing for the sake of mixing? Personally I don't think you are going to hurt anything.

Now as Rand eluded to if you are talking about mixing Sustina 0w50 & 0w20 that's different, have thought about that myself. But to go out and get the Sustina 0w20 and mix it with another 0w20, I'm not sure that would be worth it. I would just use one of the other.

Thanks cp3!

The application is a 0w20 application; so I guess I'll just go ahead and use the best 0w20 I can find and not bother with mixing it. Doesn't seem worth it after the helpful comments in this thread.

Thanks everyone!

That sounds like a SUPER blend!!

(As long as the GTL/group 3+ basestocks of the Sustina are actually compatible with the M1 basestocks, like the OP is concerned about.)

anew, welcome to BITOG!

The best 0W-20 value in Canada is clearly TGMO at $5.75/L.
The Sustina 0W-20 likely has a technical edge over the Toyota oil but at what cost?
If you can find anyone who sells Sustina in our area let us know, and of course the price. My guess is that it's going to be in the $13-$15/L range. In the States it's about $10/qt and you know we're going to pay more than that.

Cheers

it was 12-13/qt when I priced it
no one within 50 miles of me sells it and its 12$/qt+shipping(+tax)

This post got me looking at my calculator again!

According to the numbers I have been able to dig up, which I would not take as official, the 0w50 has a VI of 204 and HTHS about 4.2. Blended with their 0w20 with 229 VI & 2.6 HTHS you could likely hit the bottom end of a 0w30 with a 220+ VI! WOW. If it ever becomes more accessible I might have to try it.

I'm afraid to ask what you Canucks pay for a 2 liter can of 300V, or a quart (liter?) of Torco SR5!

Depending on one's blend ratio of those two Sustina grades, you could even go mid-high end of 0w30 (and still have that crazy V.I., along with a high TBN!).

Personally, I've only ever seen one place stock Motul here. I don't remember which Motul it was, but it was around $75 for a one gallon jug.
