BITOG Chat ?

Has anyone ever thought about or suggested the idea for BITOG to have an online chat room?

I think it would be cool to be able to real time chat with people when they're online instead of always having to PM someone. Of course the person can always elect to be invisible or offline so on one can chat with you or see your online. Kind of make it like the facebook chat, have it at the bottom of the page where you can see whos online and chat with them or if you want to you can go offline and not worry about it, this way you can chat while surfing the forum.

Just an idea I've been thinking about.
 
i'm sure that helen and the mods will love this idea. after all, they don't have enough logistic and babysitting nightmares with which to deal.

We had a shout box (chat) at one time a few years ago here. It was a total mess when the kids played with it.

Its gone now for a reason. I was not part of the admin team at the time but I bet it WAS a nightmare trying to keep it going.

I'm also sure the bandwidth increases with something like that. We spend a TON on it already and doubt we could (should) afford any more increase.

Many years ago when Tony was still alive, we used to have a BITOG chat room. A bunch of us would meet up in this chat room once a week at a predetermined hour to just talk about everything and nothing. It was kind of cool. I miss it.

I didn't know that had a shout box a few years ago, thats pretty interesting.

I think the reins are held pretty tight around here today compared to the first couple of years. I have seen this trend in general on a LOT of sites like this. Coincidence ? I don't know.
I just know that a LOT of unbridled interesting discussions you found in the past on many sites like this seem to be disappearing in the name of "decency" even in the OT forums.

I can see why they do not have a chatroom. In a lot of chatrooms armies of trolls form up, the flame wars break out, and the regular Joes cannot get a word in edgewise.

The reins have been held fairly tight here as far back as I can remember. But back when we did have the weekly chat session, BITOG had 1000 members and only a handful of us would show up to the chat. Now, with close to 50K members, it would be a whole different story.

Still, if there is interest, I'm sure there are a number of free chat services out there (not associated with BITOG) that could be utilized for the same purpose.
 
IIRC, the chat box was Java based and wasn't trouble free for many. It was best to disable to keep page loads from hanging and other odd browser behavior.

When Tony, Pete and others would chat it was just a group of friends talking. Tony enjoyed the time with friends.

Anything that is under the BITOG name will require someone to moderate and that will soon create problems. The mods and I have enough to do taking care of BITOG. The mods have jobs and families. The shout box was a failure because it brought out the worst in members. I do not enjoy banning members and that was where the shout box was heading. BITOG is known for being a website for everyone to be able to visit and feel comfortable.

So, is anyone interested in setting up a time/date for a chat using the web link that greenaccord02 provided above? I'd be up for it, just to see how things go.
