I picked up fourth vehicle in fleet to commute work or use when others not available (2 daughters and wife driving).

A $4800 2013 Acura RDX tech AWD with 160k. It has needed some work$1000 to get to snuff and pass inspection including $200 Xenon headlight/ballast. Another $200 for side mirror replacing led signal strip. A leaking spool valve and drive belt(covered in oil)/pulley for another $500.

It still has crunch in suspension I missed on test drive, guess is strut mounts front. Also need a blade key cut, the replacements just have blanks.

Body is not perfect with some scuffs but decent otherwise.

Nice find. where did you score that from, CL or FB? I still avoid fb, but I also avoid Honda, anything with awd, etc.

Same boat here, really could use another car for next week. Thing is, I might not need it next year, complete unknown until the daughter picks a college.

FB marketplace find. It likely will sit till May as sending my freshmen daughter back to college and will use her Acura ILx (fancy civic) to commute with.

Life will be easier with spare car as our fleet is old and/or high mileage. Our 4 paid for cars are worth maybe $30k.

Got it. I try to surf fb but it only allows me about a minute before locking out and wanting me to login.

I could almost use two cars as one right now is getting EOL. I was too sick to work on it this last week; it is very freeing to just park a car and work on it later.

It’s pretty amazing that relatively speaking, what’s considered a beater today, is actually often a really nice car 30 years ago. People don’t really get cars where subframes and drivetrains fall out, or duct tape is used to cover up perforation. I can’t tell you how many 16 year olds are given used cars as first cars, and they’re nicer than any one of our 3 cars!

Around here that could not be on the road, won’t pass inspection. Unless its 20+ years old, a CEL is also a fail. So a beater is now anything over 10 years old as it’s probably 3/4 of the way to junk—once it gets onto a bhph lot it goes downhill fast.

Maybe I’m pessimistic about 10 years old. Plenty of cars older than that for $10k or more.

Our cars are 2006, 2007, 2011. None are 5 figures but I do think all 3 are more than $5,000 retail. One even lacks an automatic transmission and back up cam. The 2006 actually turns 20 this year based on production month. Believe it or not, the 2006 and 2007 are really well built.

I hear you on the CEL it can’t be on, and if it gets reset, only 1 category can be not ready (proved it last year). I also learned on the 2011 pending codes are not cleared by disconnecting the battery—only the car can clear them.

I bet they are nice, but, one fender bender and they might be totaled. Doesn’t take much these days.

It has some rough edges not pictured that drops value about $1000 of the full $10k retail.

I don't think it's safe. You should have it flatbed to my driveway on Long Island and I'll give you a "it was recycled" document for your troubles. I'll make sure it gets to the correct place....... .

Right now, where I live cars are covered with salt, and it’s warm and humid, with snow on the way. Perfect conditions to have a “beater.” I don’t consider our old cars as such. My buddy is no different. He has a 2005 330i ZHP and he actually leases a new cheap car to avoid driving the ‘05 in the winter….
