Some of these have already been shown as prototypes or in other markets, but there’s already been 4 new EVs officially announced this week for the US market.

• Toyota bZ4X (and its sibling, the…)
• Subaru Solterra
• Nissan Ariya
• Fisker Ocean

Seems the Model Y was truly a revolutionary vehicle for the industry. These 4, plus the Mach-e, Lyriq, etc.

Chevrolet Silverado EV reveal coming in Jan. Explorer and Equinox EVs probably revealed in the next 12 months.

No, thanks. I'll wait for Toyota/Subaru to come up with something a little less conservative (minus the styling, of course.)

With the exception of the black-painted cladding, I actually like the way the twins look, with a slight nod to the Toyota.

Are those four makers competing for the ugliest electric SUV ?
I'm a bit surprised by the Fisker. Their earlier EV sedans were rather attractive.
Even if they were ICE powered, the trend for all the plastic cladding around the wheel wells and lower trim needs to go away.

But good luck to them all. Competition is good for the market. And it won't take long for their faults and inadequacies to surface.

LA Auto Show this week is what’s driving things. I Attended Saturday and caught the solterra debut.

The Ariya looked pretty neat and the Kia/Hyundai options were great looking as expected.

Beyond some styling cues and marketingese, they all felt very, very similar.

The Fisker, Vinfast, and other boutique offerings gave off a vaporware vibe.

The whole show was painfully underwhelming - it was clear electric was the star of the show but without any battery or tech breakthroughs it’s all very vanilla. I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw the 3rd or 4th drive train display. Manufacturers are clutching to a “we have a 301 mile range and our competition is 299” mindset.

The star of the show was the Nissan z400. That car oozes sex appeal.

You know, people in the 90s love minivan, people in the 80s love wagon, people in the 2010s love SUVs, people now loves crossover.

The only truth is, they are all the same thing and they will all go out of style, and young people would not buy the same thing their mom send them to college in (a used and ever-growing station wagon).

Hard to imagine the flat nose helps cD but what do I know. bZ stands for Beyond Zero BTW.
the flat part of the tear drop is at the front instead of the back, and preventing air from entering the hood and under the car is the most important aerodynamic feature.

So my dad just bought and picked up his Nissan Ariya the other day. He brought it over to show and I took for a test drive and all that. He has the 63kw battery option, pretty sure just the FWD model.

My impressions:

Outside styling is quite nice. They got theirs in a metallic grey finish and it looks very nice!

Very quiet cabin... No rattles/squeaks. When accelerating, no unpleasant noises or fake engine noise that I recall. Just an EV whine.

Fairly good restraint of piano black plastics, but it's still there primarily on the steering wheel controls. I like the faux wood paneling on the dash around the screens. Displays are nice quality.

Tactical feedback on the push HVAC controls is a very nice touch! As you push, you get a pretty firm "punch/vibration" to confirm your command.

Acceleration is more than adequate. Nothing crazy, but it doesn't feel lacking at all, even when pushing it from 50mph up to 70mph and such to merge.

You can certainly feel the weight upon a complete stop. You can feel the vehicle oscillate slightly back and forth.

Turning/corning is fine, feels like any other CSUV type vehicle. You get some body lean of course.

I really like the ability to move the center console forward/backward. As a tall person, it's nice to give more room (6'5"!) - In general, plenty of space for my frame in the cockpit.

Overall, just drove it around for 10-15 minutes... But initial impression is that I really like it overall. Not a vehicle I would buy per-say, but it's very nice none-the-less. I think my parents will be very happy with it... They have a 240V line being installed next week.

Without question things are getting interesting, even for me as a second car for my wife. But it will only be if prices come down.
Something on the scale of an Equinox or maybe the Nissan or what about that Leaf? Cheap after the taxpayers kick in $7,500.

I suspect it will be ICE though as we will most likely replace her car in the next two years.

My wife brought this car up to me and I thought the same thing. She didn't see the resemblance.

I like the clearance. It's a Toyota brother/ sister vs s real Subie.

Everything else just doesnt compete.

EGMP (H/K) and Tesla have 100 miles more range on the rating and charge twice as fast.

They all look pretty bad…

but at least it may mean seeing the blonde girl in the Nissan ads a few more times…
