Yesterday temps about 30F started normal and as I drove away it clattered something terrible for about 20 seconds. Almost sounded like rod bearings. I'm thinking lifters, as I looked at the oil gauge and it was at 40+ psi at the time. REALLY shocked/alarmed me. Is this oil junk?? I have always used either mobil 1 or PP usually in 5w30 but sometimes 10w30, NEVER heard a noise like this before. Thought maybe it was the [censored] fram filter, so I changed it to a Pureolator, same noise. Thing is with this weather, I cannot get out in the driveway and change it anytime soon. Has anyone ever heard of this happening simply due to changing oil brands???

Before doing anything, check the oil level on the dipstick to make sure it is not below minimum.

I used conventional Peak oil with Proline oil filter I got FAR 2 years ago in LS400 and S2000 without any noise problems. It was as good as any other conventional oil.

It took my ecotec a week to get used to PP, but it did...

There is nothing wrong with Peak synthetic oil that would cause problems!

I love the way people on this site make up facts about how an 'off brand' syn oil suddenly caused their engine not to work right!

C'mon, people - we KNOW better than this! Stop letting ignorant, 'urban myths' and mis-truths become 'fact' on this site!!!!

Well said Addyguy. Now, we have a very limited description of the event but:

Hydraulic lifters can easily collapse in the few seconds after starting that it takes to fill an oil filter. All the older BITOG members know what loud clattering noises lifters make when the lash is set a little high..... in the mechanical lifter days.

Then the sound went away in a few seconds. Now harm, no foul... new filter, same results of course until the filter is filled.

Then, it is quiet during normal starts now???

Most of my hydraulic lifter cars do this occasionally, nothing to worry about or be concerned about, just parts working exactly according to their design parameters.

Perhaps our original poster can give us updates and more info... is the noise gone now??

No oil would cause any kind of failure in the first 30 seconds of operation!!

Just stick with M1 10w30 and a wix filter and call it good.Best combo I have found for all three of my Chevy trucks.

it really sounds like the oil is a little thin and bleeding out of the lifters to me. but its hard to diagnose a problem on the computer

Thanks for all the posts and great comments. I'm not really trying to bash the Peak oil, especially since other posters have had good luck with it. I'm mainly trying to find out WHY the engine is clattering so loud. It really sounds like the rods are about ready to come out. It doesn't sound noisy at idle, but rather under a slight load as when I drive out my driveway. After about 10-20 seconds it goes completely away. BTW the oil pressure during this noise episode is over 50 psi. I will try to change the oil out tommorrow with either full syn. PP, mobil 1 or QS most likely 5w30, if I can, we're getting the freezing rain pretty good here in NOVA now.

I had a goofy thing like this happen on my 2500 when I tried one of those AC Delco E-core filters and a different brand of oil, cant remember what brand of oil it was though. I went back to a Wix filter that same day and back to M1 on the next OCI.

That sudden change would grab my attention. I'd spin on another filter and top off the oil level, and if that doesn't improve, go back to the oil you were using. Then if it still happens, it' not the oil and/or filter.

I agree strongly. Oil has nothing to do with this problem. Why not try an OEM delco filter?

+1 porkchop , Wix filters are perhaps the best value out there in filters. Low cost for great quality , only thing ill along with mobil 1 on my personal vehicle.

FWIW I wouldn't run Peak in anything but a lawn mower.

I would say Valvoline, but I'm a brand loyal kinda guy.

I'm glad that you finaly cought your own error on the PureOne filter as daddi never stated that he had changed to a PureOne, just Purolator!

And by the way, I have experienced startup rattle with PureOne's in the past where I had only experienced the startup rattle with FRAM...Strange to say the least!

We're currently using the last of the PepBoys FAR, PEAK 5W30/ProLine filter in our daughters 06 Mazda3 and each time the engine has run quite nicely by the way.

I have read(don't remember where) that the PEAK dino 5W30 is a bit on the thinner side(lower end of the cST scale), similar to Havoline DS 5W30 but, I don't really know that! I actually thought that the PEAK(made by W/NE) would have been the same/similar as ProLine(W/NE) and W*M ST(WPP) and others.

Maybe too, the PEAK synthetic 5W30 is on the thinner side of the scale(if this is actually the case), and daddi's Silverado 5.3L isn't taking a liking to it.

There are many possiblities here. We can probably rule out the filter for now!

Got the oil changed out about an hour ago. Wanted to get PP or Ultra at WM but they were out of both in 5w30. Got Mobil 1 instead. Kept the old Purolator classic on there. Engine sounded good however it was still somewhat warm and the oil room temp. The Peak seemed very thin coming out. Will see how tommorrows cold start does. Tom

Interesting, two topics on pg 1 have the same cold starting and warm-up problem. 3 Different filter brands. Both are running 5w30. Both are GM. Maybe there is something to the frozen throttle body in the other(thick oil) thread.

I'm running Peak in a couple vehicles right now.

Temps have been in the teens lately.

No problems with the Peak. It's good stuff.

There's a lot of the world running right now on Warren oil. It's the house brand at most stores. A lot of quickie lubes are using it bulk. You would have heard about problems by now.

I have found that a 10w30 seems to work best in a GM V8 on cold starts. Much more solid sounding engine in the morning. Temps here have been in the low 20's all week long.

Exactly, before calling it piston slap or something else I'd exhaust all possibilities first. It might be the oil. My OCD would drive me nuts to get a resolution, and fast!

Got the Mobil 1 5w30 in there and the noise is all but gone. Still some very slight piston slap, but nothing like with the peak oil. That oil seemed very thin...perhaps the engine didn't like it. Live and learn. BTW what oils and vis do most 5.3 GM owners seem most happiest with??
