Is there an actual need for the larger grill openings we see in many cars, and which many people complain about from a styling perspective?

Is this purely for styling or do the new, more complex engines with more electronics and tighter engine compartments actually benefit from greater airflow? Is there greater airflow?

The grills are not actually bigger, it's just visual

Times are tough and meat is getting expensive. Bigger grills mean I can pick up more strays off the street.

Here's the openings in the grille of the CX5....compared to the actual entire grille. I like the front though, and I love the look of Lexus. Some other cars though don't look so great with large grills, mainly the BMW 4 series, as the placement of the grills make it look more like big nostrils.
