BG Oil? for a BMW...is it an obscure oil?

I kinda have to agree. Most if their oils are only LL-98 certified, which makes them equivalent to something like Syntec 5w-40. Not a bad oil, but you can do better for the price.
 
This BMW is your 'absolute baby', not your beater DD.

Put a known, trusted oil in it - M1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30, or another similar, well-know syn oil. I'd lean towards the M1, myself.
 
If the shop has the rep they must know something about a few things. As a Tuner I have come to find out that factory recomended is not always the best or the most efficient. Sure BMW has tested these oils on there Vehicles and they did a fine job thus the factory bless off on the oil. But that does not mean that there are not Oils such as Redline that are not superior Oils in the long run.
 
update:
After some more talk with the shop, they agreed that I can bring in my own oil, so today I went to AZ and bought some GC
