Beware! Oil list with false API certifications!

Not sure what the issue is. It doesn't seem that different than many companies that claim to meet certain specs without licensing. Might as well go after Amsoil or Red Line. I don't see the use of any trademarked designs such as the donut or the actual starburst. One of the labels kind of looks like the starburst.

From Buzzfile:

"Questron Packaging is located in Detroit, Michigan. This organization primarily operates in the Fuel Tank or Engine Cleaning Chemicals business / industry within the Chemicals and Allied Products sector. This organization has been operating for approximately 5 years. Questron Packaging is estimated to generate $200,000 in annual revenues, and employs approximately 8 people at this single location. This organization is engaged in manufacturing activities at this facility."

Company president, Aiman Kawas, shows up in three different job capacities in Michigan; Questron president, Vice-president of AM Shoes and Textile, and as a pharmacist.

From his Linked in profile on AM Shoes and Textile, he offers this description of himself:

"The adventure begins. Walked out of a successful pharmacy career into the world of recycling used shoes and used clothing. All I can say is "it's been one freakish roller coaster ride with all the euphoric/withdrawal side effects, I wish alcohol, marijuana or any mind altering substance is HALAL for me, then I will be a rock star ". I wonder if he can get a real job with that resume?

I am making the assumption that the Questron Packaging guy is the same person as the phamacist/AM guy.

Regardless, according to Buzzfile, Questron Packaging has an annual revenue of just $200K per year - and it employs approximately 8 people. That's an average salary of $25K per year per employee. Imagine what kind of workplace that must be.

Interesting as well, Questron Packaging's website is questronlubricants.com (according to Buzzfile). The website does not exist. I suspect the Engine Builder magazine article has sent this company scurrying off like a cock roach.

The issue here is that the API Certification Marks such as the Donut and Starburst are trademarked and can only be used under a license from the API. The license is given to oil brands that have complied with the API testing protocol and submission requirements. Oils that display a certification mark or a reasonably close facsimile are in violation and the API usually sues such companies if they fail to cease and desist.

The specification designations such as SN and GF-5 are not protected by trademarks and companies can claim to meet these specifications without certification. Those that claim to meet the specification but don't are usually picked up by an auditing organization such as PQIA, API, ILMA Etc.

I looked up what it was.

https://www.api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil/unauthorized-use-of-api-certification-marks

The first three are kind of oddball as they're called SAE ATF III and ATF MD III, but are labelled as motor oil with no viscosity grade specified. They do say SN-GF5. One label kind of looks like the ILSAC starburst. They also have various ones claiming to be of certain grades, with some having a starburst-like graphic while others just says "MEETS AMERICAN STANDARDS". Those don't even mention an API spec.

I wouldn't even think about using stuff like this, but I'm not sure why the API is singling out this company. Certainly shady as heck, but I'm not sure it's a violation of their trademarks.

There are some examples there that could definitely confuse, and there are claims about approvals. With Red Line, they're claiming suitability, not actual approvals. Questron is using marks that could easily confuse consumers.

Red Line (and Amsoil, where applicable) make no bones about lack of approvals and use that as a selling point, rather than Questron, which is doing the opposite.
