Hello BITOG Members,

Pennzoil here! This time, we are joined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to welcome members to another virtual community event and as always, continue conversation around some of the automotive industry’s trending topics. In collaboration with API, we are inviting members to join a Q&A related to motor oil specifications. This November, Pennzoil Scientist and Automotive Lubricant Specialist, Sean Nguyen, and Senior Manager of Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System, Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Motor Oil Matters at API, Jeff Harmening, will be responding to questions regarding the following topics:
  • Motor Oil Specification Advancements
  • Recent Advancements to GF-6 motor oil specification
  • Latest announcements regarding the development of ILSAC GF-7
Working for Shell for more than 22 years, Sean has held various positions including Lubricant Technical Advisor, Lubricant Product Research and Lubricant Technology Trainer. Sean has an MBA and B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Houston as well as a B.S. in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University.

Jeff Harmening has been with the API since 2010 and currently manages the Engine Oil Licensing Certification System (EOLCS) program, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Certification Program and the Motor Oil Matters (MOM) program. He also oversees the Aftermarket Audit Program (AMAP) which purchases and tests thousands of DEF and engine oil samples globally to ensure conformance with required specifications.

The thread will be open for submissions from 12:00 PM ET on Monday, October 31st until 6:00 PM ET on Monday, November 7th. Both the Pennzoil team and API will work together to provide answers to your questions – you can keep an eye out for the responses to be posted in a separate thread on Thursday, December 1st.

Both API and the Pennzoil team are excited to kick off this opportunity! Please note:
  • Please use this thread only to submit questions. If you do see questions posed in other threads, please repost the question in this thread to help us ensure we address everything.
  • Please understand that there will be some questions that we will not be able to answer. We cannot divulge any proprietary information and can only speak about our own products and our areas of expertise. Additionally, there will be some questions that Pennzoil or API will answer separately. Other questions will be answered collaboratively.

We appreciate the BITOG community’s enthusiasm surrounding our community events and are excited to kick off another Q&A! Let the questions submissions begin.

ILSAC GF-7 will apparently be here in ~ 2028. 0W12 & 0W8 will now be included.

Sustaining backward compatibility is also a stated goal.

Are there any general comments you might have about future basestocks and add packs ?

With the problem of fuel dilution with many direct injected engines will the viscosities be increased towards the top of the viscosity ratings instead of closer to the bottoms or is the MPGs more important.

  1. What is Pennzoil's strategy in terms of evolving the anti-wear additive package?
  2. What anti-wear additives, if any, has Pennzoil found to have comparable properties to ZDDP?
  3. Which Pennzoil synthetic oils can provide adequate anti-wear protection in high-revving (>8,000 RPM), flat-tappet engines with high-tension valve springs given that Pennzoil oils typically contain the lowest amount of ZDDP compared with other oil brands?
  4. Why are Pennzoil API synthetic oils (Platinum 5W30, Ultra Platinum 5W30) produced at the very low end of viscosity specifications given the well documented issues with oil shear and fuel dilution which contributes to the oil's viscosity quickly dropping below spec?
Thank you!
