Between these two cars which one would you choose

Well I am looking for a daily driver and have narrowed it down between a Mercury Grand Marquis and the Oldsmobile Aurora. Both are larger cars and have V8 engines, which is what I like.

The Mercury of course uses the 4.6l engine and 4r70w transmission. I am well acquainted with those as I run this in my Mustang GT. The Oldsmobile run a 4.0l V8 not sure of the transmission. The engine and transmission I am not acquainted with as far as reliability. I am looking for any information the site may have to offer...Thanks.

I'm not much of a big-car guy, but I'd say Mercury Grand Marquis.
I do like the look and drivetrain of the Aurora, but I think you'd have less problems with the Mercury.

If you are going to get a full-size V-8 sedan, might as well make it a 'real one' with a frame and rear-wheel drive. The GM's are the last of a now-dead breed...I remember when this type of car was what the standard on the road was....sigh.
 
If you're driven by reliability and an ultra-smooth ride, you'll want the Grand Marquis (although my mom's 1996 wasn't exactly a paragon of reliability).

If it's a first-generation Aurora: If you have any passion at all for a beautifully designed car with nice luxury appointments, good power and a growling exaust, go with the Aurora. I've wanted one since my test-drive in 1996.

2nd generation Aurora: I'd leave it, only due to the the cosmetic 'upgrade' that made it look like a pregnant Intrigue.

Mercury, NO question.

The Aurora isn't a bad car necessarily, but the strikes against it are:

1) Front drive
2) Northstar engines, of which the 4.0 is a relative, are rather fragile compared to Ford Modulars
3) Front drive
4) Front drive
5) Did I mention I don't like front drive?

Yah dude but you live in Texas. Front drive is nice in the snow. Not saying the Grand Marquis with snow tires won't work. That's not what I'm saying. I think I would go Gran Marquis in this instance. The Olds seems like it could be a complicated nightmare as it gets older.
 
Ha. I had an easier time with my Vic in the snow than my Cavalier. Happen to need to make a right turn from a stop in the Cavi? Good luck. Constantly fighting between getting power to get it going and leaving traction for turning. On the Vic I just feather the throttle right and get the [censored] to swing around properly. Im not talking about drifting competitions here, just a touch. Like four wheel steering.

In this case, go with the Grand Marquis. With good maintenance, the 4.6 will last a long time. The northstar gets to be very problematic when it gets up in miles.

yeh I have been real happy with my Mustang's reliability, and I have driven them numerous times as rental cars. I do like the looks of the 1st gen Olds though. When I say daily driver it would probably see 2-3k a year. I got a few other rigs + my motorcycle
 
Having owned a 2001 V8 Aurora that gave me perfect service, I choose the Olds. Much more luxury, better handling and looks than the Merc.

But really - anyone would do, they are both great cars.
 
The guy lives in woodenville wa, not eastern wa (spokane, pullman etc., the places that actually get lots of snow), go with the mercury, this should not even be a debate.
 
The Aurora. Anyone can have a GrampMarquis.

Good friends of mine had two Aurora's. Ran the wheels off of both of them. They were disappointed that it was discontinued before they could get a third one.

They really liked both of theirs.
