Which American Engine Will Last The Longest

Former commercial driver here...I'd really rather have a Buick 3.8! I've encountered enough prematurely-worn-out Vortec V6 and glitchy 351W motors to consider either one a can't-miss selection.

Buick 3800
Ford 4.6
GM 4.3 V6
Ford 351W

Guide breakage is quit common on 2V Modular engines....The engines lives & will even run.
Guess we got lucky around here, literally dozens of 2V 5.4s that I know of still running strong and never had this issue....some of them have the startup piston slap though.

It depended on the age of the mold used to make the guides. Ford had some issues with using the molds too long and the guides that were produced using the old molds would have QC issues and fail, while the guides produced using fresh(er) molds would last.

Experienced this first-hand as my buddy's '03 F-150, his guides failed and his engine jumped time at less than 100,000km (60,000 miles) while our '02 Expedition soldiered on with well over 200,000 miles on it with the original guides, just like my dad's '00 Expedition, which is still on its original guides, as is his '03 Town Car. Town Car my buddy looked at to buy at one point had 1.2 million km on it, engine had never been open, just oil, filters and plugs and I assume a coolant change.

I’m going to add the Chevy 6.0 Gen 4, LS engine. Mine has 265,000 miles. Single owner. The trouble is, the 6L90 transmission has the same mileage. If I want to keep going I’ll probably have to have it rebuilt at some point. That would probably mean laying out more than the 17 year old truck is worth. I guess it’s a Call of Duty. 😀

Yeah, lots cheaper if planned before it grenades …

I've been driving old cars for 30 years, and never had an engine "go out". Unless you abuse them or use them commercially, this experiment could take a long, long time.
