The -7 is a point spread it means that you are betting on one team to win, but win by more than that number. I am not sure how the numbering goes. According to what the first reply says, "M-7" means that M has to win by more than 7. A bet on F would still pay off if they lose, but by 7 or less. This is called F "beating the spread". It also leads to the potential of a form of cheating by M called "point shaving".

The O/U is an alternative bet you can make that the total number of points scored by both teams will be more or less than 51. It does not matter who wins the game on an O/U bet.

The most important betting term is "the vig" which is the 10% or so of the bet the book takes win or lose. Ergo you need to win 60% of your bets to break even.

Regression towards the mean is a universal fact of any form of betting. The more you engage in it, the closer you come to the win/lose mean. Therefore, the vig, or house edge, become your losses with certain wagers. The lottery, however, is so skewed, a lifetime is not long enough to recover any money.

Do yourself a HUGIE and don't bet.

Life ain't long enough to make back the "learning curve" losses.
Yes, I came from an anti-gambling family.
Yes, I'm a stick-in-the-mud.
Yes, you're extremely cool, intelligent and actually do resemble James Bond (who could do anything including gamble).
Whatever....don't play their game.

... Which it is why the book's only objective in setting the numbers is to encourage the exact same amount of money is wagered on each side. The spreads will vary through time to encourage more wagers be placed on one side to even out an imbalance.
