Michigan produces 80% of the country's tart cherry crop. It appears that much of this year's crop may have been destroyed by the effects of the early March warm up.

If you love cherry pie and other tart cherry products, you had better stock up now! Don't say I didn't tell you so.

Yea, it's not good. We had some very warm weather then lots of hard freezes. Apples might be in the same boat as well.

No, but I am involved in ag. research and keep abreast of all these things. I work with other tree types and so far, we are not affected (knock on wood).

This is one excellent example of keeping our agricultural resources diversified and not concentrated in any one location. I.E., Michigan's apple crop damage mentioned by Bob won't be quite as bad nationally, since apple production occurs across more of the U.S..

Off topic, it's ironic that I have empty 55 gal. drums sitting in my barn that say "Apple concentrate. Product of Brazil.??????

Bob, we are neighbors!

I am glad you did not take my joke the wrong way. But this winter/early spring weather has been quite unusual. Even here it has touched 100+F 3 of the last 6 days. Now it is a nice 85F and feels actually good. But tomorrow it should get to 95F in time for the weekend.

Good idea Al. Cherries are much better whole than just as juice.

Lowers the glycemic impact a lot to eat the whole fruit. Plus a lot of the good stuff is in the pulp/peel, etc.

I'm surprized they still farm cherries in Michigan. 15 years ago I remember we could import cherries from offshore cheaper than it cost the Michigan farmer to grow it on the trees before picking. I heard back then the economics were so bad that the farmers just left the cherries on the trees!

Yea..I know that the whole cherry is better than the juice. Apparently though the juice is amazingly good for you. Always compromizes. Difficult to impossible to get sour cherries most of the time, even in large "supermarkets"..like Wegman's

I am just trying to do everything possible to get my cholesterol ratio < 3:1 (Total: HDL) without statins. I'm close.
