Hey all. I have quite a few filters and have heard of storage issues, aking the filter element brittle with age.

Would storing the filters full of virgin oil in the carton they camein have benefits over just placing them on the shelf in the condition you purchased them?

Store inside your air conditioned house, zero need to fill with oil. I got about 30+ oil filters for my cars.

I actually keep the good (i.e. expensive ones) in my attic, in freezer bags with a dessicant bag in with the filter to keep them dry. My attic gets fairly hot, maybe 110-115F, but I figure that's a bit cooler than they would get in use. No ill effects so far.

...in a vacuum sealed plastic bag stored inside the house in a dark place where there's absolutely no light. Then you'll be able to sleep well at night knowing that your filters are safe from deterioration.

The biggest worry with the polymer material that makes up the filter media is ozone. Keep filters away from electric motors, high voltage conductors, and ultra violet light (sunlight). Some elements of car exhaust - especially nitric acid - are also harsh on the media, so it may be better for long term storage to keep filters out of your garage as well.

Sanitize them first then wrap em in sanitary wrap and then serene wrap. Then put them in an airtight bullet proof, fire proof safe in a ventilated, climate controlled space. Make sure you install an alarm system and a monitor system. You should hire armed security guards to keep an eye on the monitor screens and entryways.

I clean mine with a q-tip coated in oil to remove the metal filings (believe me they are plenty there). Then lightly coat the mounting face with oil to prevent rust. Then I serene wrap them and put them back in the box that I seal with tape. Overkill, yeah probably.

I know its silly, but I vacuum pack mine using my food saver. Then they go in my hall closet.

And I thought I was "over the top" for just keeping them in the house, in their boxes

. They are going to be exposed to a lot worse when on the engine.

Short term, in the heated, air conditioned house.

Keep your long term supply at the store.

That way, they are always fresh.
