To all the GC users, what if you had to use 5W-20 to maintain the warranty? Then what would you use?
I really have very few options left here. I won't buy GIII oil. I want a true synthetic. So Mobil 1 Extended Performance's out. Isn't PP a GIII too? Not a fan of RP. Don't have a race car, so no need for Redline. I guess it's down to gold GC or stick with Amsoil. Amsoil SM is thinner now? Have they resolved the viscosity issue (which didn't seem to really be an issue)? Is it still getting as good of used oil analysis? So which of these two? GC or ASL?
If I could run GC in both my daily drivers, I would.
I run GC in a 'Yota 3.4L; Maxlife synthetic in an Isuzu; and Delo 400 in a cummins diesel.
There really isn't too many true synthetic OTC's available. I have an uncle who works for Conoco Oil Refinery and swears by Amsoil, that's all he's ever used for years - I've personally never tried it, mainly because Havoline was my choice for years. Still would be, if I could find the High Mileage oil easier.
On the 'Yota though, I wanted to try something different in using a pure synthetic from as young as mileage as possible to see how clean it is in 300k from now.

Pennzoil Platinum would be my favorite OTC for 5W20, 5W30, and 10W30 right now since it is buy one, get one free at AA. Time to stock up!

Based on the oil analysis results I've seen posted here:
Best 20wt, I'd say the Amsoil XL Series, 5w-20 (which is widely available). (If you can find Redline 5w-20 at local retail stores, that's even better than the Amsoil - but much more expensive)
Best 30wt, I'd say the GC, 0w-30
Best 40wt, I'd say Mobil Delvac 1, 5w-40

Why would anyone pay >$6/qt for GIII oil? If it were stil GIV, sure. But it's not.
How much is GC now? ASL is $7.62/qt if I order 1gal + 1qt as a preferred customer. How much is PP? I'm beginning to wonder if I should just go with a GIII and go by the OLM.

Some parts of the country can get it for $1 Qt during promotions by regional chains.
I was wondering about Shell Rotella T Synthetic. You'd rate it above Mobil 1 Extended Performance now?
Seems like the 2 for on deal on PP makes it a gimme for anyone going by the OLM.

No 5W-20. Some of those are "ties" in which case the best price won.
If I had to choose a OTC 0W/5W-20?
1. Mobil 1 0W-20
2. Castrol Syntec 5W-20
Mobil because I suspect the 0W-20 still contains some PAO.
Castrol Syntec 5W-20 because I like the 9.1 cSt.

Personally I just run Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend in my Ford because its still under warranty and requires 5000 mi OCI.
PP didnt make the list because of its low 8.0 TBN. I really dont see the point of synthetic without extended drains.

Now that's the kind of analysis I was hoping for. Interesting on the PP, since it seems to be the darling of the OTC syns for the moment. Syntec with high cSt, but I can't technically use the Mobil 1 0w20 yet. Still using the MC 5W-20 for now...but still noodling.

If you need a 30 weight, then in my opinion, Maxlife Synthetic is the best OTC synthetic.
