According to this article in 'Lubricants World' from October 1999, it was a decision/ruling by the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. No mention of FTC in the article.

Here's the article (PDF format):
Part 1 (2.7 MB)
Part 2 (1.5 MB)

Mobil could have filed the complaint with the FTC after that 1999 article was published. But if they did file a complaint with the FTC, I cannot find any ruling from the FTC doing a quick search on the Internet.

The sources that claim Mobil also filed a complaint with the FTC, don't say that the FTC actually made a ruling on the subject, so maybe Mobil dropped their complaint or the FTC refused to hear the case. When you appeal a case to the US Supreme Court and they decline to hear you case, that means you loose even without hearing any arguments, and the FTC basically works the same way due to the number of complaints that are filed.

Well I just bought five 5 quart jugs of QTorquepower 5w30 at WM for $9 each. So, for $1.80/qt I'll stick to the synthetic.

I've paid as little as a penny for dino oil, so in reality you would have to run that stuff 180 times longer than me to come close.

Synth all the way, lol.

Are there any negative long-term effects of running an oil designed for diesel engines in a gasoline engine? A few years ago (maybe more...no memory cells left!) I read on the Corvette Forum that this is a problem and wanted to find out what the folks on this superb forum think.

I have extended my OCI and break even with PP.... and I have five cars to change, and I get tired of it so I like the longer OCI.....Changing oil cuts into my beer drinking. So there is some value to me.

My one hope, and I agree the syn guys have not provided proof, is it is cleaner, less breakdown, less burn off. Even fake syn group III is refined so well I hope no muck. Also, If a guy loves his car and the extra 10-15$ an oil change makes him happy, it is a fraction of the cost of operation.

Unfortunately, I have no cars I love, and will not, until I get my parasitic children out of college.

Over the past several years I have been able to get synth for $1/qt after sale/rebate. Those are my 'best value' synth. My favorite is PP.

Next would be going to a blend like MC..for $1/qt. Yea have 40 qts at that price.

Then I drop down to GrpII+ such as Pennzoil YB...for $1/qt. Treat it like a blend for OCI.

I would just adjust the OCI if I could but I can't really. It's hard to justify paying much more for synth in my situation.

[ah the good ol days]
syn for $1/qt after rebate, dino for $0.59/qt
brings tears to these unlubricated eyes.

end of the day I would settle for the most inexpensive syn at wally's, (where shell dino first came out and started at $0.50/qt regular price not even 6 years back :-()

For the last 2-3 years, the most I paid for synthetic was $2/qt M1 0W20 and 0W40 at WM clearance shelf. The least was Synpower for $0 (yes, zero) after Valvoline and Kragen combined rebates. For Dino, I paid $0.49/qt for Chevron and Havoline after rebate.

For me, best synthetic value is Synpower at $0.

My point was that we (obviously) can't compare sale/rebate/closeout oil's prices to judge their value. Any deal is possible. Let's agree synth is 2-3 times more expensive and needs to perform equally at a 2-3 times service interval to be cost-effective.

I personally think you get a better result with dino oil at 5000 miles than synth at 10k-15k.

With dino price approaching 1/2 the price of syn, for 10k miles you need to change dino twice plus 2 filters vs 1 change of synthetic with 1 filter. If you don't have the means to do it yourself, you paid 2 labor charges for dino vs 1 labor for syn.

Even if you do it yourself, I'd rather do the work half as often. As much as I like changing my own oil, life gets busy.
