best place to live

The far Northeast is nice. Lots of dirt roads and small towns. You will want to find a job there before you move though. Places like NH have no sales tax, but that doesn't mean the cost of living is really cheap. There are some cheap apartments and trailers, but real estate in general tends to be pretty expensive. Lots of rich people like to vacation up there so touristy places are not cheap.

Also, the rural areas can be really rural. No Wal-Mart within an hour drive one way (or more), limited restaurants, maybe only one or two gas stations in town, etc. It might be a different kind of small town from what you are used to.

I think Indiana would be a good option for you. Others to consider would be Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa. Probably similar to what you are used to but not as hot.
 
AZ or NM. I would live in northern AZ Prescott area maybe.
NM is my first choice. Lincoln County is in my heart.

Well being located in the North American continent makes Canada pretty American too.

What exactly would make it awful?
 
well i really dont want to get into it but since you asked. high taxation the fact that they basically hide behind america and the healthcare just everything imo canada is a liberals paradise and im exactly the opposite of that i like my gun rights and my freedoms and cananda likes govt thats how i see it.

Personally, I think it would be silly to discount a state just because of it's overall political orientation. States are big, and you can always live near people like you. My state certainly has very conservative areas, and since he's looking for somewhere more rural, and rural areas are generally more conservative it could certainly be a good fit.

That said, he can legally shoot someone for stealing his car stereo in Texas, and that seems important to him based on previous threads. So, maybe WA would be too liberal. I'd recommend Texas.

As far as AZ, it does have parts with 4 seasons. I will say you couldn't pay me enough to live anywhere but the left coast. I'll never go back to that weather, ever. I spend a lot of time outside, so weather is my main consideration.


I miss the natural beauty of the left coast sometimes, but the economy is not so great out there. Especially in my native state of Oregon, there just isn't much of a wealth base there, outside of a few rich Nike execs. The environmental regs are pretty oppressive in Oregon, although, the taxation is less than average and no sales tax.

WA is a little better with the tech and aerospace industries. Had a friend just move up to Seattle from Austin to take a job with Microsoft.

I'm hoping to be able to get a summer home in the PNW when I retire. Which is still a long long ways off anyway.

I really think you've Hit the nail on the head .

I grew up on an Island, Anything outside was Strange and scary.
It seems to me, You may not be on an Island, but you may as well be.

Get out, Eat Thai food, see how others live, form your OWN opinions.

You will then be better able to decide what you want.

I first worked abroad, them emigrated in my early 20's, looking back, I find it hard to believe how limited my horizons were.

You live in one of the worlds free countries, travel like a man who is free!
 
ive had thai food ive just never seen an ocean or mountain lol. i like oregon a lot but im not sure how practical it is. indiana is ok
 
I traveled all over the country for a decade on business before I started a family. So I know living in the middle is not for me. Once your exposed to the ocean, your hooked.

I once lived just south of Portland, very nice place, they even have a few Rednecks.
Climate is great, within an hour you can be cold and damp on the coast, or hot and
partched inland.

Taxes arn't the whole story, low taxes do not necessarily equal prosperity.
You have to look at the big picture.
 
Check the examples I gave one town inland. Your still only 10 mins away, so close you can smell the salt water. The drop in prices is quite a bit.

Way out west in the mountains, 5-6 hours from the coast. Near Tennessee
