Best oil for noisy engine

It doesn't, they have not bothered to update their pdf since they started cranking out "Resource Conserving" High Mileage oil. Apparently they've been very busy the last 6 months!

I believe they may have been bottling it since before they even had the label changed, I ran a Castrol High Mileage blend that should have been fine but the UOA indicated it was a LOT thinner than I expected it to be, I'm pretty sure I got some of the new stuff in my blend even though it wasn't marked resource conserving.

Concerning Pennzoil Conventional and the engine getting quieter after 20 minutes of driving:

I suspect the reason WHY is that the higher moly needs a little time for the oil temperature to rise sufficiently to chemically activate the moly so it adheres to the metal surfaces.

Also, sometimes a little time is needed for the anti-wear additives to overcome the detergent additives in the oil - it being a constant battle between the two.

...And engine parts do expand, narrowing the clearances as temperatures rise.

Have you considered adding a can of Lubro Moly (LM2009) MoS2 to the fresh oil?

This friction modifier has resulted in a smoother / quieter running engine in dozens of vehicles I've owned over the years.

for this round of oc, I used an older, QS 4x4 5w30 syn blend. Wow, this stuff is much noisier than anything I've used before. It's worse than running a 5w20. Next up, back to Pennzoil conventional for winter, then I'll try Castrol High Mileage 5w30. Castrol because it has the highest VI at 100c for a 5w30 that get the energy conserving label. Not many HM's get that label.

If you want quiet a lot of people comment on how Quaker State Ultimate Durability quiets down there engines. You could give that a try. I would stick with the 5w20 weight, but 5w30 probably wont hurt. I would NOT go to a 0w40 just for "quiet". Just because the engine is noisier does not mean its wearing out faster.

I can personally confirm this.
Those 2.3L and 2.5L Ford engines are characteristically a little noisy. Having said that, a combination of Pennzoil Conventional and MoS2 with a Motorcraft oil filter should quiet the engine down some. You need to leave the Mos2 treated oil in there for a few thousand miles to let it do it's magic, so you might not hear a dramatic IMMEDIATE improvement. On followup oil changes you can cut the MoS2 treatment in half. If you want to do extended OCIs you could use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in place of the Pennzoil conventional, but the Pennzoil conventional will probably quiet the engine down more.

Also, using TCW3 in the gas (1oz oil per 5gal gas) seems to quiet down the fuel injectors a little.

I haven't tried the "NEW" Quaker State Ultimate Durability, but I did the last "label" of it...5w20 was bad, 5w30 not much better. They couldn't compare to Pennzoil conventional. It's the best I've tried so far.

I've read all kinds of stuff on this lately. People claim more MPG too. Not too sure about all that. Could be worth a try though.

Castrol needs a good flogging, those are OLD specs you are seeing from before the Resource Conserving stuff showed up, months ago. And certainly they knew they were coming out with it many months before that. Still no update to the specs. Dorks. I think they were bottling the stuff long before they started marking the bottles too, my used oil analysis of Castrol High Mileage came out shockingly thin when it shouldn't have according to those specs. There's resource conserving for you. Thanks Castrol. Haven't used Castrol High Mileage since.

I don't believe so. No HM met it, but now Castrol, Valvoline and Mobil Super Syn HM does (Not Mobil 1 High Mileage). We have three that I know of that know meets it. I know Castrol and Valvoline didn't used to.

Ok. Mos2 has a big shot of boron in it and I think motor oil saver has got a load of boron in it too.
That could be why the stuff helps noisy engines.

I wouldn't go thicker. You aren't consuming any oil so going thicker would just add more resistance to the oil pump and not gain you anything,and just cost you more fuel.

The LM Motor Oil Saver IS "going thicker", since that stuff makes STP, or molasses, seem like water!!

And yes, I know it is just 300 ml into 4-? quarts of oil, but it IS REALLY THICK!

(But, I have NO DOUBTS about it being a great product for it's stated use.

I think you misunderstood me. Yes Castrol High Mileage is now "Resource Conserving" as is Maxlife and a Mobil flavor. What I'm telling you is the "specs" you are looking at are the "old" specs before Castrol High Mileage was resource conserving. They are not correct and badly in need of update.

The Boron oils did nothing for my case. They were a little nosier. PYB/moly did the best so far.
