What would be a good oil to try and quiet down a 2.3L ford ranger engine? Lifters and valves seem really noisy. Currently running NAPA 5w20 syn. Was thinking about trying 5w30.

Our 11 Ranger 2.3L was really noisy on the [censored] Castrol oil the dealership was using. We told them to put Motorcraft oil in it, and it's been silent ever since- not to mention we picked up about 2 mpgs around town. Like said above, use a Motorcraft filter or other good quality filter too.

Yep, MC semi, MC filter should do it.
It's the filter's ADV,As stated before the MC filter seems to work the best.Wouldn't hurt to run Pennzoil Conventional in it if MC is hard to obtain.
Put a can of mos2 in it. Problem solved

Your friends 4.6 takes the Motorcraft 820S filter. It needs the silicon anti-drain back valve to avoid dry starts. Start one up in the winter, using any other filter and you'll hear noise. I have the same engine and a long time ago I put a Mobil 1 filter on it. Couldn't believe how bad the start-up sequence was. Never ever again.
If you search the net there are tons of posts on this subject. Ford knows exactly what they're doing by specifying that filter.

Throw an 820S on there tomorrow. You'll be happy you did. If I'm not mistaken every application for which Ford specs an 'S' filter has that potential issue.
Also, I believe the bypass valve is on the opposite end of the Ford spec on a Mobil 1 filter. Ford wants it on the base.
